What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors praise Walmer Castle for its beautiful, award-winning gardens, particularly the Queen Mother's Garden, and its rich history as a Tudor fortress and former residence of notable figures. The blend of historical exploration and natural beauty makes for a pleasant visit, though some find the Christmas menu disappointing and overpriced.
"Went to The Walmer Castle in Notting Hill for my first-ever Sunday roast, and it was honestly everything I could have hoped for! The inside is super cute and cozy, exactly the vibe you want for a relaxing Sunday dinner. The service was great, and we started by sharing a bottle of wine. For our meal, we both went with the Devon Chicken Breast. The roasts came with all the classic sides: Yorkshire pudding, roast potatoes, carrots, red cabbage, parsnips, and gravy, everything perfectly cooked and full of flavor. If you’re looking for a cozy, authentic Sunday roast experience in Notting Hill, I’d definitely recommend this spot!"

"Have had food at the walmer castle before and it has always been great and so was excited to book ahead for the christmas menu. Sad to have to stick a 1 star review but frankly the Christmas set menu was embarrassing. Was seated downstairs in the bar as a table of 10 which was completely unexpected. Not only was I supposed to be notified that I wouldn’t be seated in the upstairs dining area but the manager effectively said I had actively requested it. The starter was okay but the main was just woefully small and mediocre, as pictured. The dessert was also not great and the sticky toffee pudding was crispy on the sides as if it had been overcooked, ice cream was half melted by the time it reached the table. The final kick in the teeth was the complementary mince pie. I have never seen such a small mince pie in my life, literally half a bite. I would have been peeved if I had paid £30-40 per head but approaching £90 a head including drinks is just sad. Should have tanked the deposit and gone to maccies. My friend tried to complain and got laughed at by the waiter. Frankly bizarre experience."

"🚇 Notting Hill Gate
🍺 £7.80 Stone & Wood IPA
The Walmer Castle sits just a stone’s throw from Portobello Road, tucked away in the backstreets of Notting Hill, West London. The nearest Tube is Notting Hill Gate.
Built in 1845, the pub takes its name from the famous Tudor castle in Kent, which became the official residence of the Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports — a role once held by the first Duke of Wellington.
David Beckham and Guy Ritchie once owned the pub, and in 1975 it featured as a TV location in the classic Britcop drama The Sweeney.
Today, the pub is run by @wrenpubs_ who also operate The Surprise in Chelsea and The Carpenter’s Arms in Hammersmith.
This elegant one-bar pub has a stylish yet traditional feel. At its heart is an almost horseshoe-shaped servery with a copper-topped counter. The decor features a boarded floor, curtained entrance, traditional seating with comfy banquettes, period fireplaces, beautiful wall panels, and an eclectic mix of commissioned artworks. Upstairs are two private dining rooms in a similar refined style, and out front, a few benches await for the warmer months.
The beer selection is diverse, offering independent brews, familiar favourites, and a cask ale. I opted for a Stone & Wood IPA — a perfect pint, though at a premium price. The food menu features elevated pub classics using seasonal produce: fish and chips come in at £21.50, and hearty roasts are served on Sundays.
I arrived at 2pm on a warm, sunny Friday afternoon in September. The pub was fairly busy with a local crowd — most in for a beer, some for a late lunch. The atmosphere was convivial and laid-back; getting settled in was easy. Service was superb — welcoming, accommodating, and friendly.
From the inviting Victorian exterior and elegant interior to the top-notch brews and warm, welcoming atmos, this was a thoroughly enjoyable visit. A little pricey, yes — but go on, treat yourself. Definitely a must-visit if you’re in the area.
