What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Walker Riverside Park is lauded for its surprising natural beauty and peaceful riverside setting, offering a welcome escape from urban life. However, some visitors caution about potential safety concerns in certain areas due to evidence of drug use and anti-social behavior, advising vigilance, especially for families.
"This place is beautiful and a surprising oasis in the middle of town.
I spent hours wandering around and felt as though I was in the countryside, apart from the odd view of civilisation towards the river you can often find yourself not able to see and buildings at all and surrounded by nature.
The only problem. I found a number of different types of Den, one was full of empty cans, another empty lighter gas, one looked like it had a few old needles lying around.
Definitely the haunt of local "radgies" the spot where I parked looked like it had been used to dispose of stolen vehicles by fire looking at how melted the tarmac was.
I guess if you want a semi dangerous adventure in nature right in town, then this is the place for you.
I enjoyed it, but there was an element of danger should I bump into the wrong crowd or person at the wrong time.
I bumped into about 2 groups of youths and 5 dog walkers. we all kept our eyes to ourselves, and there was no confrontation. Phew :)"

"Great to walk or cycle to coast along the last section of the coast to coast.
The stage from the swing bridge to the mouth of the Tyne is about 8 miles"

"It's kept okay.
No bridge nearby to cross over to Heworth. It's frustrating as you can just about to see the station on this side.
A bridge would cut a 1 hour journey via public transport into 10 minutes on feet. We need more options for Zone 2 river crossings! >("

Navigating the River Tyne
Despite the crossing limitations, the riverside path itself is a highlight. It's a popular route for both locals and visitors, offering a refreshing escape. The scenery is predominantly natural, with the river as a constant companion. For cyclists, this stretch is particularly appealing, providing a relatively smooth and scenic ride.
When exploring the riverside, be mindful of the environment. While many enjoy the natural beauty, some reports indicate areas with discarded items. Responsible use and adherence to park guidelines will help preserve the park's appeal for everyone. :river:
Connecting to Longer Trails
For those looking for a more extended adventure, Walker Riverside Park serves as a segment of the renowned Coast to Coast path. This connection allows walkers and cyclists to embark on longer journeys, heading towards the coast. It's a great starting or ending point for those undertaking parts of this famous long-distance route.
Safety and Community Perceptions
These reports suggest that while the park can be a pleasant place for a stroll, run, or dog walk, there's an element of risk, especially if one encounters the 'wrong crowd' or visits at the 'wrong time.' The presence of 'radgies' (a local term for troublesome individuals) and groups of youths on motorbikes has been noted. This has led to advice for families to exercise caution and potentially avoid the park altogether.
On the other hand, many visitors report uneventful and pleasant experiences, encountering only dog walkers and other peaceful park-goers. The key takeaway is to be aware of your surroundings, stay vigilant, and perhaps plan your visit during daylight hours when the park is likely to be more populated with families and other recreational users. :warning:
Community Insights
Reddit discussions highlight the park's dual nature. Some users praise it for its natural beauty and suitability for cycling and dog walking, while others strongly advise against it for families due to safety concerns. This user-generated content is invaluable for potential visitors to gauge the risks and benefits. TikTok and Instagram content, while often showcasing the park's aesthetic appeal, may not always reflect these safety considerations.
