Reviews Summary

Visitors praise Wakerley Great Wood for its beautiful, extensive woodland trails and free parking, making it a great value for a day out. It's particularly loved by dog owners and mountain bikers for the ample space and varied terrain. Some note the lack of clear path markings and the potential for muddy conditions, as well as the need to be mindful of cyclists sharing the trails.

"Made our first visit on Nov 5, 2023, after driving by hundreds of times over the years! We've been to nearby Fineshade a few times, but the expensive parking fees put us off (not to mention the bikes whizzing past all the time). Wakerly is better, in my opinion, on all counts; while Wakerly is great for bikes, we saw only 2, and the riders were considerate and courteous. Wakerly is also packed with interesting paths that snake through the dense woodland. Although the access road has a few potholes, these can be negotiated easily if you drive slowly. Parking is free (always a bonus!) and the car park is fairly large (although it probably gets pretty full during summer months, I would imagine). We visited on a lovely autumn afternoon. The ground was very muddy in places, though passable with care. There are slopes and small hills in places, making it more interesting. Wakerly is also excellent for dogs. The few we saw were having a brilliant time exploring the twisting paths and undergrowth! For those who need a level surface, a packed-gravel road runs through the centre of the woods, making it easier for prams or wheelchair users. I did spot a toilet block (I think!), but I don't know how clean they are or if/when they're open. Be warned - there are no clearly marked paths, so you'll need to have a good sense of direction to make it back to the car park! We really enjoyed our first visit and will definitely be returning as it's only a 20 mile drive for us."

"Great place to walk with the dog although you do have to keep your eyes open for cyclist. There are many trails through the woods, but quite often these are now claimed by these two wheeled, two legged enthusiasts. Most are very polite, but you do get an occasional one who thinks they own the woods."

"A hidden gem! A secluded woodland with some fun mtb trails. Well worth a visit - midweek you'll be lucky to see anyone else at all."
