What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Vicarage Road Stadium is praised for its electric atmosphere and traditional football ground feel, especially from the Rookery Stand. Its compact size brings fans close to the action. However, some find the home support less vocal than expected, and food prices inside are considered high. Parking on matchdays is a significant challenge.
"Great away day at Vicarage Road last night. A wonderful atmosphere inside the stadium and friendly and helpful stewards around the ground. Had a great view behind the goal."
Simon Crick
"*Rated as an away fan
Vicarage road is a dry stadium and they do not sell booze here. Disappointing to learn at the ground so important to note beforehand. The away fans concourse is also very small, you feel packed in like sardines.
Otherwise this is a well run stadium with friendly, helpful staff. Beware coming here though, you may see your team lose 3-0 apparently. Star for each goal you beat us by. If you wanted more you should've scored more."
REG
"OK stadium for viewing. Easy access. Concourse concessions we're barely acceptable - limited food available, no alcohol in the away fans section. Stewarding OK. Facilities can be stretched - notably the ladies toilets."

Tailored advice for your travel style
👨👩👧 Families with Kids
When planning your visit, prioritize public transport to avoid parking hassles. Arriving early will give you ample time to find your seats, explore the concourse, and perhaps grab a snack without feeling rushed. While the stadium offers typical matchday food, bringing small, permissible snacks for younger children might be a good idea, though always check the stadium's policy on outside food.
⚽ Football Purists
While the stadium has modern elements like the Elton John Stand, it retains a sense of history. Be prepared for a more intimate setting where the roar of the crowd can be quite impactful. If you're looking for a stadium with a more modern, corporate feel, this might not be it, but for those who value atmosphere and a close-up view of the game, Vicarage Road is a solid choice.

Matchday Travel & Parking
For the smoothest experience, public transport is the recommended mode of travel. Watford High Street station is a short walk away, and Watford Junction is also accessible within a reasonable distance. This avoids the stress of parking and allows you to soak in the pre-match atmosphere in the town centre. If you must drive, consider parking further afield in designated car parks in Watford town centre and walking the remaining distance. Always check local traffic updates and stadium advisories before your journey.
The Vicarage Road Atmosphere
While the home support can be enthusiastic, some visitors have noted that the overall singing and chanting might not be as constant or loud as in some larger, more modern stadiums. However, this doesn't detract from the overall experience, as the proximity to the action and the dedicated fan base still create an engaging environment. The stadium's location also means the matchday buzz extends into the surrounding town, with many pubs and eateries contributing to the pre- and post-game ambiance.
Food and Drink Experience
Many fans opt to take advantage of the stadium's prime location near Watford town centre to enjoy their pre-match meals and drinks. This allows for a wider variety of choices and potentially more budget-friendly options. Popular nearby establishments include The Oddfellows Arms and The Moon Under Water. A key tip from attendees is that food service inside the stadium can cease around halftime, so if you're planning to grab a bite, it's best to do so earlier in the game.
