What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors consistently praise Tobermory Distillery for its intimate atmosphere, knowledgeable and friendly staff, and exceptional whisky tastings, particularly the warehouse experience. The picturesque location on the Isle of Mull adds to its charm. Some wish for a bar to sample core range whiskies without a tour.
"The Wife and I had an amazing experience with the staff and got to try some amazing whiskies. The team treated us like family and made us feel like we were at home. The warehouse tasting is well worth the money and a lot of fun"
Rafael Rodriguez Jr.
"Took the cask tour. Just 7 of us with the amazing Robert to take us through 4 cask strength whiskies from 2012 to 1996. Amazing value and a good craic to boot. Highly recommend"
Dr Adam
"Visiting this distillery had been on my list for a long time, and my wife and I were delighted to finally make it. The distillery itself is not very large, but it is truly beautiful. The tour was well structured, both informative and enjoyable, and Kristy did an excellent job guiding us.
On the same day, I also joined a tasting, which was exceptional and gave me the chance to try some fantastic whiskies. In addition, I took part in the warehouse experience with Olivier — an absolute highlight. He was not only very knowledgeable but also incredibly engaging, and the whiskies we tasted were unique and outstanding.
If I had to mention one downside, it would be the lack of a bar where visitors could sample core range or special editions without having to join a tour or tasting."

The Art of Tobermory & Ledaig
In contrast, Ledaig is the distillery's peated expression. The name 'Ledaig' is Gaelic for 'safe haven', a nod to Tobermory's role as a sheltered harbour. Ledaig whiskies are characterized by a robust, smoky flavour profile, often with maritime and medicinal undertones. This duality allows visitors to experience a wide spectrum of single malt whisky flavours from a single distillery.
Many visitors rave about the opportunity to taste both styles, with the warehouse tastings offering a chance to sample exceptional cask strength expressions directly from the barrel. These intimate sessions are frequently highlighted as a must-do for any whisky aficionado.
Navigating to the Isle of Mull
It's crucial to book your ferry tickets in advance, especially if you're travelling during peak tourist seasons or holidays. The ferry schedule dictates the feasibility of day trips, so planning your itinerary around these times is essential. Once you arrive in Craignure, you'll need to travel to Tobermory, which is located on the northern tip of the island. This can be done by car, bus, or taxi. The drive itself offers stunning island landscapes.
For those without their own vehicle, consider the logistics of public transport on Mull. While buses connect major points, a car provides the most freedom to explore the island's hidden gems before or after your distillery visit. The journey is part of the adventure, contributing to the overall charm of visiting a distillery on a remote Scottish island.
The Tobermory Distillery Experience
Many visitors highlight the warehouse tasting experience as a standout. These sessions often involve tasting whiskies directly from the cask, providing a unique opportunity to sample rare and cask-strength expressions of both Tobermory and Ledaig. Guides like Robert and Olivier are frequently praised for their knowledge, enthusiasm, and ability to make the tasting both educational and fun.
Beyond the whisky, the distillery's location in Tobermory village adds significant appeal. The charming harbour, with its iconic brightly coloured buildings, provides a beautiful backdrop for your visit. It's a perfect spot to wander and take photos before or after your distillery tour, making for a well-rounded and memorable day out on the Isle of Mull.
