What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors praise the Netherton Tunnel for its unique, adventurous atmosphere and historical significance. The sheer length and darkness offer a memorable experience, though the deep puddles and need for a strong torch are frequently mentioned challenges. It's a journey into the past that requires practical preparation.
"I used to walk through here as a kid, but haven't been through it in about 25 years. I went through today from the Dudley Port side, and it was a very nice trip down memory lane. Most of the time you will be able to see the other side from the entrance, and can prove a little daunting. There are occasions, however, where you cannot see the other side at all, so it's like looking into an endless black tunnel (such as if it's raining, overcast, foggy or at night). The tunnel is just under 2.5 miles long and can take about an hour to walk through, especially if you take time to look at the air vents and dodge all the puddles. I recommend a high power torch to fully appreciate it. I got to half way through and turned my torch off, and it is literally pitch black with a very small light coming from either side of the tunnel entrances, definitely an interesting experience. It's over a mile either way to exit the tunnel, there's no other way out. You will absolutely need water proof shoes as there are some deep puddles at least 50% the way through, some of which you have no choice but to walk through. Sound travels all the way through the tunnel, so you can hear a barge coming through that is at the opposite end, and you can hear shouting from kids way ahead. You can't hear what they are saying as it's distorted by the echoes, but you know they are there. If you are going to cycle through here, I'd recommend going slowly, otherwise you'll end up getting soaked from the puddles, or falling off your bike from some hard to spot potholes. There is a nice breeze all through the tunnel, thanks to air vents all through. The air vents used to be much brighter in the past, but most now are a little hard to spot when inside as there's almost no light coming down (the photos I included makes them appear much brighter than they actually are). One side of the tunnel has gates, which appeared locked from the Dudley Port side, so you'd best stick to the left side (or right side if facing from Warrens Hall side). I walked here today from the Coseley tunnel about 2-3 miles up the canal, and you can go a lot further, and you avoid roads and people (mostly) along the way. Nice and peaceful walk, and the Netherton tunnel just tops it all off. If you go in the morning, you may not even see anyone."

"It was a fantastic walk but if you're afraid of the dark (I mean pitch black) best to bring ha high powered torch. The complete tunnel walk took around an hour to do and an hour back. Bring wellies or strong waterproof shoes though because there are deep puddles through the whole walk. It's also quite cold in there so best to bring a warm set of old clothes. Be wary of other people and bikers coming through bit it's not that busy, majority of the tunnel I had for myself so it had extra spookiness to it aswell."

"I highly enjoyed my trip down the tunnel with the Dudley Canal Trust. You can walk or travel by boat through the tunnel.
It is amazing just how much work was put into building the tunnel many years ago.
From the very start, light can be seen at both ends of the tunnel. It appears to be just a short distance. It is amazing just how long it truly is."

The Engineering Marvel of Netherton Tunnel
Walking or cycling through the tunnel offers a unique perspective on this historical waterway. The sheer length and the complete darkness in many sections create an immersive and somewhat eerie experience. Sound travels remarkably well within the tunnel, allowing you to hear distant barges or voices, adding to the atmosphere.
Visitors can explore the areas around both the southern and northern portals. The southern end, near Dudley Port, features Cobb's Engine House, offering insights into the industrial heritage. The northern end, near Warren's Hall, includes the Tividale Aqueduct and provides access to further scenic canal walks, allowing for a more extensive exploration of the region's waterways.
Navigating the Tunnel: Practicalities and Precautions
Secondly, a powerful torch is indispensable. While there's some light at the portals and from air vents, large sections are pitch black. A high-lumen torch will not only help you see but also appreciate the tunnel's features and avoid hazards like potholes. Dressing warmly is also advised, as the tunnel maintains a cool, consistent temperature year-round.
For cyclists, the advice is to proceed slowly. The uneven terrain, puddles, and potholes can make for a challenging ride if not approached with caution. It's also worth noting that sound travels far, so be aware of other users approaching from either direction. Sticking to one side of the tunnel is generally recommended for smoother passage.
