What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors rave about Thomason Foss as a beautiful, hidden gem with a stunning waterfall and a fantastic spot for wild swimming. The challenging but rewarding walk through scenic woodlands is a highlight for many, though some caution it's not for the faint-hearted or those with mobility issues. The chance to see a steam train adds to the charm.
"Moderate to difficult walk, alltrails makes it sound easy lol very steep inclines and a scramble in places. However it is totally worth it if you can make it, fabulous views and perfect for wild swimming. We had done a 3 hour hike and swimming at the waterfall was wonderful and welcomed, would recommend going early as on our way back the trail got alot busier so we timed it perfectly and got to swim with no-one else there."

"It's a pretty tough walk to the waterfall. We went in November with 3 kids. It's manageable but it's steep in places. Some of the paths are narrow too. Not the biggest waterfall but worth a look. Once you get to it you have to turn back the way you came. The path goes right by the railway track so if you timed it right you might see a train"

"Lovely little gem of a waterfall during our 10km hike in Goathland. The path to turn from Beck Hole towards the waterfall wasn't obvious but thanks to Google Maps for showing the path down. Good to take a dip in as well if the water isn't too cold."

Some brave souls even describe the icy water as 'freezing' but feeling like they 'could conquer afterwards.' It's a true test of mettle and a memorable part of visiting Thomason Foss.
Important Considerations for Wild Swimming: Always assess the conditions before entering the water. Be aware of your own swimming ability and any potential hazards. Some visitors mention that the path from Beck Hole towards the waterfall isn't always obvious, so having a map or GPS can be very helpful.
Key Takeaways for the Walk: Prioritize sturdy, waterproof walking boots. Be prepared for inclines and uneven ground. If you have any concerns about mobility, it might be best to admire the waterfall from a more accessible viewpoint or reconsider the visit.
The North York Moors Railway Connection
