"The Old Swan Harrogate is a hotel that, unfortunately, feels quite tired and in need of a serious refresh. The building itself has charm, but the overall experience leaves much to be desired. The rooms are basic and lack modern comforts—there are no fans or air conditioning, which on hot days makes sleep uncomfortable and the stay less enjoyable. The lack of ventilation really hampers comfort, especially during the peak summer months.
The staff members do their best to provide good service, but their efforts seem constrained by management. During our visit, we encountered a particularly frustrating situation when we wanted to open a door in the lounge area on what was the hottest night of the year. We were told that the manager had explicitly said no, explaining that if a wasp flies in, they would have to shut the bar immediately because it would be considered unhygienic. This response felt overly strict and out of touch with guest needs, especially given the weather and the relaxing atmosphere we were hoping to create.
Overall, The Old Swan could really do with a revamp. It’s a place that’s stuck in the past—dull, dowdy, and in need of a jazz-up to bring it back to life. The staff, if given more freedom and support, could really elevate the guest experience, but currently, they seem limited by a management that’s perhaps too rigid. With a bit of investment and a fresh approach, this hotel could become a much more inviting spot. As it stands, it’s a tired old place that’s in need of some serious attention to regain its former charm and comfort."
