👉 Ever shouted into an echo chamber? At the end of the Boundary Walk I paused at the Maidenhead Sounding Arch, a Victorian railway bridge built in 1839 by Brunel 🚂. It’s famous not just for carrying trains but for its perfect acoustics — the echo bounces back in such a crisp way it almost feels unreal. Brunel left his mark along the Thames with a tunnel and a number of bridges. Here’s one of them: the railway bridge at Maidenhead as seen from the Thames Path. Also known as the Sounding Arch on account of its acoustics. Built in 1839 to carry the Great Western Railway. TIL of the Maidenhead Railway Bridge in England. When it was built, its arches were the widest and flattest in the world. Critics feared the bridge was unstable, so the arches' centering was left in place, until it was destroyed in a storm - the arches stayed up, vindicating the design.

And it still stands, carrying one of the busiest railways in the UK over the top of it.

Everyone was very friendly and we had a wonderful afternoon. The Sounding Arch is very interesting if you appreciate the engineering and design that made it quite controversial at the time."
