TIL of the Maidenhead Railway Bridge in England. When it was built, its arches were the widest and flattest in the world. Critics feared the bridge was unstable, so the arches' centering was left in place, until it was destroyed in a storm - the arches stayed up, vindicating the design.
And it still stands, carrying one of the busiest railways in the UK over the top of it.

"We were here to watch the Maidenhead regatta. Very lucky to have perfect weather. It's a nice area and there are some very good restaurants around. Everyone was very friendly and we had a wonderful afternoon. The Sounding Arch is very interesting if you appreciate the engineering and design that made it quite controversial at the time."
