"One never would have thought this fascinating Sub Tropical Garden was to be found at this place. Destroyed during war, later on - plants used for medicinal purposes and then gardens- reorganized. Fascinating!"

Elena S

"These were the first sub tropical gardens in the country. They were created in 1863 by Battersea Park’s first Superintendent, John Gibson. The Sub-Tropical Gardens disappeared during World War II when many of the gardeners had to go to war and much of the park became allotment gardens to grow food to help feed local people. In 1992 the Friends of Battersea Park planted a large palm tree, taking the first step in the recreation of the sub tropical gardens. Wandsworth Council supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund restored the Gardens to the original plans in 2004."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The History and Restoration of the Subtropical Garden

The Subtropical Garden in Battersea Park holds a significant place in horticultural history as the first of its kind in the United Kingdom. Established in 1863 by John Gibson, the park's first Superintendent, it was designed to showcase exotic plants and create a unique, lush environment. This pioneering garden was unfortunately lost during World War II, a period when many gardeners were called to serve and the park land was repurposed for food production to support the war effort. The vision for its revival began in 1992 when the Friends of Battersea Park planted a large palm tree, symbolizing the garden's potential return. Reddit

This initial step paved the way for a comprehensive restoration. Supported by Wandsworth Council and the Heritage Lottery Fund, the gardens were meticulously recreated to their original plans in 2004. Today, visitors can wander through this beautifully restored space, experiencing the lush foliage and vibrant blooms that echo its Victorian origins. It stands as a testament to the dedication of local groups and the importance of preserving green heritage. Reddit
