"The brick buttress with arch shaped brickwork immediately alongside which you can clearly see in the photos is the abutment of Brunel's original timber viaduct which the present viaduct replaced. Brunel built all the viaducts on the GWR originally in timber as they cost a fraction of brick built viaducts and quicker to build, that enabled the GWR to open the railway quicker and get the money rolling in. Then go back 25 yrs later and replace them with brick viaducts alongside. Genius."

"Nice place to walk the dog in the sunshine. You can pass under the viaduct and walk through the woods behind."

The Engineering Marvel of Stambermill Viaduct
Brunel's original viaduct, constructed around 25 years prior to the current one, was built primarily of timber. This was a strategic choice for Brunel; timber viaducts were considerably cheaper and quicker to erect than their brick counterparts. This allowed the Great Western Railway (GWR) to open new lines faster, generating revenue sooner. The brick buttress you can still see today is a direct remnant of this ingenious, cost-effective approach to railway expansion.
The replacement with a brick viaduct demonstrates a later phase of infrastructure development, where more permanent and robust structures were favored. Visiting Stambermill Viaduct offers a unique opportunity to appreciate this transition and the foresight of Victorian engineering. It’s a fascinating site for anyone interested in industrial heritage and the history of the railways.
