What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Penton Hook Island is praised for its tranquil atmosphere, abundant birdlife, and scenic picnic spots, offering a delightful nature escape. While some visitors enjoy the wilder charm, others note that trail maintenance could be improved. Past temporary closures have also been a point of concern for potential visitors.
"We like to walk the stretch of the Thames between Littleton and Staines and Penton Hook Island makes an interesting detour on that walk. Access is over the lock to a garden area and then over a walkway along the top of a weir. We have walked there on the day the Mayflies hatch and it is fascinating watching the birds in a feeding frenzy. We have also seen some gorgeous jewel coloured Damselflies on the island. We have seen a Heron fishing in the pond on the island and seen Cormorants, Common Terns, Black Headed Gulls, Chiffchaffs, Warblers, Blue Tits, Robins, Green Parrots, Ducks, Coots, Moorhens and Swans on our walk around the island. We heard a cuckoo calling on our walk. There is a spot with a picnic table, the section near the lock is a nice manicured garden where you can watch the boats go through the lock and the rest of the island is a wild nature reserve with streams criss crossing it."

"Charming island just behind the lock. 15 minutes to walk around the island and plenty spots to stop and have some snacks. Table for picnics, little beaches and platforms over the water. The only thing it could be improved is the trail maintenance, overgrown grass is several parts."

"Beautiful location not very far from the town on Staines. Lovely walk around the entire island with some amazing views of the homes and nature. Parking is available and it’s a quick 10min walk."

Wildlife and Nature
While the island offers a rich natural experience, it's worth noting that trail maintenance can be a factor. Some visitors have mentioned overgrown grass in certain parts, which is characteristic of a less manicured, wilder nature reserve. This, however, also contributes to its charm for those seeking an escape into nature. The contrast between the manicured garden area near the lock and the wilder sections of the island provides diverse environments for both flora and fauna.
Access and Visitor Experience
However, potential visitors should be aware of past issues regarding public access. The island has experienced temporary closures, with one review mentioning a closure lasting for nine months due to management concerns. This highlights the importance of verifying the current access status before planning a visit. Despite these potential access challenges, the island is generally appreciated for its tranquil atmosphere and scenic views of the marina and opposite homes.
