"What a wonderful place. St Werburgh’s City Farm is the sort of place that makes you stop and think—think about life, about community, about the sheer, unadulterated joy of doing something useful with your hands instead of hammering away at KPIs and ROI projections that will ultimately mean nothing when you’re worm food.

We came here today as part of a work volunteering scheme. And this is, quite honestly, one of the best days of the year for me.

Our host for the day was the utterly brilliant Alex, the farm’s site manager. You meet a lot of people in life, and some of them just get it. Alex gets it. He has the rare ability to be both welcoming and efficient, gently herding our corporate rabble into something resembling a useful workforce without once making us feel like we were in the way (which, let’s be honest, we probably were).

We dug holes. We built fences. We did some plumbing. We even built benches. But more than anything, we took time out of our lives to be in nature, to be with people, to be part of something real.

Because that’s what this farm is: something real. It’s for the community, run by the community, benefitting the community. It reminds us that life isn’t about boardrooms or spreadsheets, but about connection, about getting your hands dirty and actually doing something.

If you get the chance to visit, go. If you get the chance to volunteer, definitely go. You’ll do yourself some good. You’ll do the community some good. And, in the end, that’s what life is really about."
