Living near St Mildred's Church is contributing a lot to my novel. I can only write based on real locations, and it works best if I have been in the place myself. ♡ Next one will be the inside of the church, they have the most amazing ceiling so let's hope I can catch that with my poor camera. #writingcommunity

The Story of St. Mildred

St. Mildred's Church is named after Saint Mildred, an Anglo-Saxon abbess of the 7th and 8th centuries. Her story is deeply intertwined with the history of Kent and the early Christianization of England. While her remains were famously moved from Thanet to Canterbury Cathedral in a significant event orchestrated by King Cnut, this parish church stands as a testament to her enduring legacy and local devotion. Reddit

The church itself is a venerable structure, with parts of it dating back to the medieval period. Its presence within the city walls signifies its historical importance in the development of Canterbury. Visitors often find the statue of St. Mildred inside the church a poignant reminder of the saint the church is dedicated to. Reddit

Exploring St. Mildred's offers a glimpse into a quieter, more personal aspect of Canterbury's religious history, distinct from the grandeur of the Cathedral, yet equally rich in its own right. The churchyard, with gravestones stretching back centuries, further enhances this sense of historical continuity. Reddit

Visiting the Churchyard

The churchyard of St. Mildred's is a significant historical feature, containing graves that date back to the seventeenth century. It offers a quiet space for reflection and a tangible connection to generations past. Visitors can explore the headstones, noting the changes in epitaphs and styles over the centuries. Reddit

It's important to approach the churchyard with respect. While it's a place of historical interest, it remains an active remembrance garden. Visitors are kindly asked to refrain from walking on graves and to ensure pets are kept under control and do not disturb the peace. This ensures the space remains a dignified and contemplative area for everyone. Reddit

For those interested in local history or genealogy, the churchyard can be a fascinating place to spend time. The weathered stones tell silent stories, and the overall atmosphere is one of peace and historical depth, making it a valuable part of the St. Mildred's experience. Reddit
