"When I was a lot younger I used to visit this small area of Winchester. There used to be a shop that sold, toys, jokes & wooden household items. I think that a lot of the toys were handmade. I think that the shop was called 'John Davies ' , and was opposite the small chapel.

"Tucked behind the Buttercross monument is a narrow footpath that leads to Winchester Cathedral. You’ll find the Church of St Lawrence on the left hand side of the footpath and about 20m from the monument.
To one side of the entrance there is a blue sign which says “BUILT UPON THE SITE OF THE CHAPEL ROYAL OF THE PALACE OF WILLIAM THE CONQUEROR”.
I don’t know if it’s the history attached to it, but I once inside I find it to be very peaceful and calming. Definitely worth visiting on your way to or from the Cathedral."
