What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors find St. Fittick's Church Ruins to be a lovely historic site with interesting gravestones and architectural remnants. However, some are disappointed by instances of vandalism, such as spray paint graffiti, which detracts from the historical ambiance.
"Lovely historic ruin, shame someone's been inside with a spray can and painted some pink graffiti inside though! On some of the gravestones too, moronic behaviour but it's right next to a kids playpark so I suppose it's to be expected that some 'damage' will be done. Enjoyed the momento mori gravestones and really interesting to see the remains of what could be a Jougs chain. Will have to take a trip to the other church that has the bell from this one"

In-depth insights and expert knowledge
The History of Fortified Kirks
These fortified churches often featured thick walls, limited entrances, and sometimes even defensive towers. While St. Fittick's is now a ruin, its remaining structure allows us to appreciate the ingenuity and resilience of its builders. Understanding this context adds a layer of depth to your visit, transforming it from a simple ruin exploration into a journey back in time to a more precarious era.
Symbolism in the Gravestones
Beyond the 'memento mori' stones, keep an eye out for other historical markers, such as the remnants of a Jougs chain. This was a form of public penance where individuals were chained to a post outside the church as a form of punishment and public shaming. Discovering these historical artifacts provides a tangible connection to the social and religious practices of the past, making a visit to the ruins both educational and evocative.
