Which of the two rooms is your favourite? For me it has to be the secret chapel! This is gorgeous little room has the most incredible painted religious scenes on its ceiling. These paintings are very similar to those at St Mary’s church, Grandtully in the lower Highland. Those at Grandtully were said to be the work of Dutch artists, and surely that is also the case here. In the medieval and early...

Have you seen a fortified Kirk? Well such fortified church buildings (Kirk being the Scots name for church) exists across Europe and there are many on either side of the English Scottish border. On the border, they were built up until the 17th century, when England and Scotland were finally united under the monarchy of James I. The surviving parts of the 14th century fortified Kirk of Aberdeen C...

Reviews Summary

Visitors find St. Fittick's Church Ruins to be a lovely historic site with interesting gravestones and architectural remnants. However, some are disappointed by instances of vandalism, such as spray paint graffiti, which detracts from the historical ambiance. Reddit

"Lovely historic ruin, shame someone's been inside with a spray can and painted some pink graffiti inside though! On some of the gravestones too, moronic behaviour but it's right next to a kids playpark so I suppose it's to be expected that some 'damage' will be done. Enjoyed the momento mori gravestones and really interesting to see the remains of what could be a Jougs chain. Will have to take a trip to the other church that has the bell from this one"

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The History of Fortified Kirks

St. Fittick's Church Ruins offer a glimpse into the era of fortified kirks, a fascinating architectural style prevalent in Scotland and along the Anglo-Scottish border. These structures were built not only for worship but also for defense, serving as a refuge during times of conflict. The need for such fortifications arose from the turbulent history of the region, where raids and skirmishes were common. The surviving elements at St. Fittick's hint at this defensive past, showcasing a building designed to withstand threats. TikTok

These fortified churches often featured thick walls, limited entrances, and sometimes even defensive towers. While St. Fittick's is now a ruin, its remaining structure allows us to appreciate the ingenuity and resilience of its builders. Understanding this context adds a layer of depth to your visit, transforming it from a simple ruin exploration into a journey back in time to a more precarious era. TikTok

Symbolism in the Gravestones

Among the most striking features of St. Fittick's Church Ruins are its 'memento mori' gravestones. The term 'memento mori' is Latin for 'remember you must die,' and these stones often feature symbolic imagery intended to remind viewers of their mortality and the transient nature of life. Common motifs include skulls, hourglasses, and skeletal figures. These gravestones offer a poignant and thought-provoking element to the site, reflecting the beliefs and attitudes towards death in past centuries. Reddit

Beyond the 'memento mori' stones, keep an eye out for other historical markers, such as the remnants of a Jougs chain. This was a form of public penance where individuals were chained to a post outside the church as a form of punishment and public shaming. Discovering these historical artifacts provides a tangible connection to the social and religious practices of the past, making a visit to the ruins both educational and evocative. Reddit
