What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors praise Shirley Windmill for its fascinating history and the dedication of its volunteer guides. The affordable cafe and shop are also a hit. However, the steep, ladder-like stairs inside limit accessibility for some, and its infrequent opening days require careful planning.
"Really interesting place to come! I believe it's only open 6 times a year, so you'll need to plan ahead.
They organise volunteers to take small groups around the windmill and explain everything to you. It's really interesting technology and lasts for just under an hour.
The windmill has incredibly steep steps (essentially ladders), so it's not suitable for everyone.
The cafe afterwards has a lovely selection of homemade cakes, tea/coffee and mementos. Everything is very reasonably priced.
Overall, I'd definitely recommend popping down if you've not seen a windmill before!"

"A good place to visit for a bit of local history. The guided tours are free and run by volunteers — thank you to Tim Roberson who gave us a clear history of the windmill's technology and how it has been adapted through its years.
Before heading into the mill, there is a brief summary given on the structure of the two models outside, including a sample of wheat at different stages of the milling process.
The stairs/ladders inside are quite steep and may be difficult to people with limited mobility, however, you can stay on the ground floor and watch a video documentary on the windmill.
There is a small souvenir shop that was, to our surprise, very cheap and affordable, and the quality of the products are very good too. There is also a limited selection of coffee and tea and some cakes if you need a bite."

"A wonderful piece of local history! Whilst owned and maintained by Croydon Council, it is staffed by a welcoming group of volunteers who give guided tours on selected open days throughout the year. A small selection of refreshments and cakes are also available in the neighbouring visitor centre. Well worth a visit!"
