Reviews Summary

Visitors rave about the stunning beauty of Sgwd y Pannwr and the surrounding waterfalls, describing the tiered cascade as 'pure magic' and a photographer's dream. The opportunity for wild swimming and picnicking by the water is a significant plus. However, many caution that the walk is steep, rocky, and can be very slippery, requiring good footwear and a reasonable level of fitness. Crowds can also be a factor, especially during peak times.

"Long rocky and very steep walk down, some parts with steps. You can get down to the falls from the 4 waterfalls trail but well worth the hike.
This also leads to Sgwd Isaf Clun-Gwyn from the bottom via an access path.
Down at water level you have a great view back at the waterfall and it's a great place to go for a dip in the large open water area in front of it. It's not fast flowing in the summer months. You can also just enjoy the view from rocks above or the higher side view points.
It's a good place to cool off and rest, sunbathe or to have a picnic on the rocky banks before climbing back up on hot days."

Aaron Clarke

"Stunning waterfall, more of a carm one, although I'd like to see it after a few days of rain. Good footwear needed for all these waterfalls.
Highly recommend"

Ian

"There’s something unforgettable about stumbling upon a tiered cascade like this on a sunny Easter escape. The sunlight danced on the moss-covered rocks as the water leapt from ledge to ledge, filling the forest with its gentle roar. Standing here, you can feel every spray of mist and hear every echo through the trees—it’s pure magic✨"

Understanding Sgwd y Pannwr's Unique Form

Sgwd y Pannwr, meaning 'Waterfall of the Fuller,' is a particularly captivating waterfall due to its distinctive tiered structure. Unlike a single sheer drop, the water here cascades over multiple ledges and through numerous natural cracks and gullies, creating a dynamic and visually complex spectacle. This unique formation offers a variety of photographic opportunities, allowing you to capture the water's journey from different angles and perspectives. InstagramReddit

At the base of Sgwd y Pannwr, you'll find a large open water area that is not fast-flowing, especially in summer. This makes it a popular spot for wild swimming and a refreshing place to cool off after the hike. The rocky banks provide a perfect spot for a picnic or simply to rest and soak in the atmosphere before the climb back up. Reddit

While the walk down to the water level offers a close-up view, there are also higher side viewpoints that provide a broader perspective of the waterfall's tiered descent. The surrounding moss-covered rocks and lush vegetation add to the magical ambiance, especially when sunlight filters through the trees. Reddit

Navigating the Trails: Safety and Preparation

The trails around Sgwd y Pannwr and the other waterfalls in the Brecon Beacons are beautiful but can be challenging. The primary concern for visitors is the steep and often slippery terrain. Many sections involve rocky steps and uneven ground, which can be treacherous, especially after rain. Wearing proper hiking boots with good grip is non-negotiable for safety. Reddit

Beyond footwear, being prepared for the unpredictable Welsh weather is crucial. Layering clothing is recommended, as you can quickly warm up during the hike and cool down significantly near the waterfalls. Waterproof jackets and trousers are advisable, even if the forecast looks clear. Carrying water and snacks is also important, as facilities are limited along the trails. TikTok

While the main paths are generally discernible, it's wise to have a map or use a reliable navigation app on your phone. The popularity of the Four Waterfalls Walk means it's usually busy, which can help with navigation, but it also means being mindful of other hikers. Respecting the environment by staying on marked paths and taking all litter with you is essential for preserving this natural beauty. Reddit
