The quality of performances and the vibrant atmosphere are frequently highlighted as major draws. Some find the banquette seating less comfortable, and pre-theatre dining on Saturdays can be a challenge.

"Outstanding in every way as a theatre. I came to its opening , and saw my first ever theatre play here 'in the round', the production was "Zack" with Trevor Peacock ( from dim memory)
I remember being fascinated by the knife sharpener for some reason 🤔😅.
I was there last week for the Pan African Speakeasy , prior to the showing of "Liberation " stellar performances from everyone. And all credit goes to the team that turned this sacred theatre space into an evening social venue for dancing eating and building community."

Elizabeth Cameron’s

"We haven't visited for a while and went to see Abigail's Party. Kim Marsh was brilliant as the boozy Beverly and with the whole cast didn't disappoint. A credit to the original Play For Today performance from the 1970s. Glad it was kept in the 1970s and not updated.
The Royal Exchange is still a great venue, a relaxed atmosphere, and easy to order interval drinks that were reasonably priced. We will definitely be returning."

Christine Lawlor

"What a privilege it is to visit this fantastic theatre. We loved Abigail’s Party which had a thoughtful, rotating set to work in the round. The banquette seats are very low and won’t be suitable for everybody, but a great affordable option if you can manage it.
The building itself is fabulous and I would highly recommend popping in for a drink to soak up the atmosphere and discover the history of the Royal Exchange."

The Unique Theatre-in-the-Round Experience

One of the most defining features of the Royal Exchange Theatre is its theatre-in-the-round auditorium. This innovative stage design places the audience on all sides of the performance space, creating an incredibly intimate and immersive theatrical experience. Unlike traditional proscenium arch theatres, there are no 'bad seats' in terms of sightlines, as every audience member has a direct view of the action. This setup fosters a unique connection between the actors and the audience, making each performance feel dynamic and engaging. Instagram

This configuration allows for creative staging and a palpable energy that flows throughout the space. The close proximity to the actors means that subtle expressions and nuances are easily visible, drawing the audience deeper into the narrative. While the banquette seating can be low and may not suit everyone, it contributes to the theatre's character and affordability for many patrons. The multi-tiered seating, marked with coloured steps, also aids in easy navigation and finding your spot within this distinctive venue. Instagram

Community and Social Events

Beyond its theatrical productions, the Royal Exchange Theatre actively fosters a sense of community. Events like the Pan African Speakeasy transform the theatre's foyer and bar areas into vibrant social hubs. These evenings often precede performances, offering attendees a chance to mingle, enjoy music, and experience a lively atmosphere before the show begins. By creating these inclusive events, the Royal Exchange Theatre extends its appeal, drawing in a wider audience and reinforcing its role as a vital cultural asset for Manchester.
