Reviews Summary

Visitors praise Riverside Nature Reserve Guildford for its peaceful atmosphere, diverse wildlife, and scenic walks, especially along the River Wey. While the nearby A3 can be noisy in some areas and paths can get muddy, the free entry, ample parking, and engaging boardwalks make it a beloved spot for dog walkers and families seeking a natural escape.

"My dogs love it here so come once a week. Noise of the A3 in very close proximity isn't the best but you can walk down to the towpath to avoid. The wetlands and boardwalk are now quite dilapidated but lake and meadow make for a nice walk and carpark is free and always space available. As a dog owner myself I just wish more people (professional dog walkers especially) would be more vigilant in picking up after their dogs. New dog waste bins are welcome. Recommend as friendly walkers and dogs and relatively quiet/less busy than other areas."

Elizabeth Walters

"Lovely walks, though the highway can be rather loud in some places where you're right next to the highway fence. But move away from those bits, and your in a serene reserve. The walkways are fantastic, walking over marshes and waterways, though there are some really muddy bits to get to the marsh walkways. A nice to have would be an additional bridge or walkway over where water feeds in at the top of the lake."

Anthony Pearse

"The board walks were ok, until a dozen cows decided to join us. We retreated to a passing place and we carried on just fine until they turned around and came back. I could imagine some would find this worrying. Worth wearing wellies if it's been raining at all and you want to walk around the lake or along the towpath."

Navigating the Reserve: Paths and Mud

Riverside Nature Reserve Guildford offers a network of paths designed to let visitors explore its diverse habitats. The boardwalks are a key feature, providing elevated access over the wetlands and waterways, allowing for close-up views of aquatic life and flora without disturbing the environment. These are particularly popular for their scenic value and unique perspective. Instagram

However, visitors should be prepared for muddy conditions, especially after rainfall. Some sections leading to the marsh walkways or along the lake and towpath can become quite boggy. Wearing wellington boots (wellies) is highly recommended, particularly during wetter seasons, to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable experience. Reddit While some paths are noted as being buggy-friendly, the muddy terrain can present challenges, so checking conditions beforehand is advisable. Instagram

Recent reviews suggest that while the boardwalks are generally well-maintained, there's always potential for wear and tear. Some visitors have noted areas that could benefit from further improvements, such as additional bridges or walkways to enhance access, particularly around the lake's water inlets. Reddit Despite these minor challenges, the path network effectively opens up the reserve's natural beauty to a wide range of visitors.

Wildlife Encounters: From Birds to Bovines

The reserve's diverse habitats, including meadows, wetlands, and open water, attract a rich array of birdlife. Visitors can often spot various species, making it a rewarding location for birdwatching. Instagram+1

Beyond the avian population, the reserve is also known for its grazing cattle. These large animals are a common sight, particularly along the lake and towpath areas. While they add to the rural charm and offer unique photographic opportunities, visitors are advised to be mindful of their presence. Encounters with cows can sometimes be a surprise and may require visitors to retreat to passing places or wait for them to move on. Reddit This adds an element of unpredictability and a true sense of wildness to the experience.

The reserve's ecosystem supports a range of other creatures, contributing to its overall biodiversity. The combination of water features and open spaces creates an environment where various insects and smaller animals can thrive. This makes Riverside Nature Reserve a dynamic and engaging place to explore, offering constant opportunities for discovery.

The Soundscape: Balancing Nature and the A3

One of the most frequently mentioned aspects of visiting Riverside Nature Reserve Guildford is the auditory experience. While the reserve is intended to be a peaceful natural retreat, its proximity to the busy A3 motorway means that road noise can be a significant factor in certain areas. Visitors close to the highway fence may find the noise level quite pronounced, potentially detracting from the tranquility. Reddit

Fortunately, the reserve offers solutions for those seeking a quieter experience. By walking down to the towpath along the River Wey or venturing deeper into the reserve's interior, the impact of the A3's noise diminishes considerably. Reddit This allows visitors to immerse themselves in the natural sounds of the environment, such as birdsong and the gentle flow of water. The contrast between the areas affected by traffic noise and the serene pockets of the reserve highlights the importance of strategic exploration to maximize the peacefulness of your visit.
