Lovely winter view from Westgate Garden beside the Great Stour River, with a 200 year-old plane tree and a Victorian Tower House in Canterbury. The gardens themselves are stunningly beautiful, with the short stretch of river either side of the Westgate Tower extremely pretty either side. It is such a lovely place to stop by.

Reviews Summary

Visitors consistently praise the River Stour for its scenic beauty and the relaxing experience of punting or walking along its banks. The gardens are a highlight, offering a peaceful escape. Some find the wildlife sightings particularly rewarding, while the modern sculpture adds an unexpected artistic element. Occasional flooding can impact path access, and booking punting in advance is advised.

"Chalk stream springing from near Lenham, flowing through Ashford, Wye, Chartham, Canterbury, Fordwich, Stodmarsh national nature reserve, Grove Ferry, Sandwich and joining the sea between Pegwell and Sandwich Bay. There are river tours via punt around Canterbury, canoes by wild canoes from Fordwich and Grove Ferry, and boat between Fordwich and the sea. There is a hard surfaced 3 mile long path between Chartham and Canterbury by the edge of the river, allowing access to all although the kissing gates and cattle grids are a challenge to many mobility scooters. There is good wildlife watching along much of the rivers length, especially the dragonflies and damselflies with Nolfolk Hawkers and willow emeralds now often seen. There are now beavers living on the Stour, mostly from Fordwich down river. It is not uncommon to see feeding signs, and it you are lucky, the animals themselves."

Francesca Partridge

"River stour beautiful walks I love walk from city to Chartam out to chilham lakes so so pretty 💖 so much wildlife to see . Different times of the day atmospheric along the river and different seasons. When nightfall can see the bats flitter above the stour."

Ally

"Always such a lovely walk along the riverbank, lots of wildlife to be seen generally including ducks, coot's, kingfishers, water voles, gulls and many small wild birds.
The river is very high when we have extensive rainfall which then means the flow is much faster and can sometimes flood and cover the footpaths, as it has done in my video filmed in December 2019.
Still it's one of my favourite places all year round.
Peaceful, serene and very beautiful.."
