What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Portobello Swim Centre offers a unique blend of a functional pool and historic Turkish Baths, with the added bonus of its prime beachside location. While the facilities are described as dated by some, the Turkish Baths are a highlight for many. The main drawback appears to be the inconsistent pool booking system and website usability, which can lead to frustration for visitors trying to secure a swim session.
"Cait was incredible today, helping with questions, talking about the facility and in general, a lovely person. sinhead however was confusing with the layout and how the facilities work. would maybe visit again though"
Rosie
"it is literally impossible to swim here. even if you call ahead and they tell you the pool is free and available (weird that you have to), if you then go there they'll have another excuse why you can't use it. every time there is an issue with the pool or it is entirely blocked off for childrens classes. with my membership I never even once managed to swim as they always have some problem.....they of course do take the money anyways can't recommend"
G B
"Great location and view of the sea.
Bit dated but functional.
Could be cleaner and smell nicer."

For younger children, water safety lessons are sometimes offered, featuring Olympians, which can be an exciting and educational experience. The swim centre's location makes it easy to combine a warm-up in the pool or Turkish Baths with a bracing dip in the sea. Just be prepared for the invigorating chill and consider bringing a warm robe for after your swim.

In-depth insights and expert knowledge
The Portobello Turkish Baths Experience
Some visitors find the layout and process initially confusing, describing it as an 'expensive steam room' if they don't follow the intended circuit. However, those who embrace the process report significant benefits for well-being and detoxification. It’s important to understand that these are Victorian Turkish Baths, a specific historical style, rather than contemporary Turkish Baths.
While the steam room has faced temporary closures according to some reports, the core experience of the hot and cold rooms remains. It's a step back in time, offering a different kind of relaxation that many find invigorating.
Navigating Pool Access and Bookings
This has led some to advise strongly on booking sessions in advance through the Edinburgh Leisure website or by calling ahead. The website itself has been described as 'terrible' by some users, making the booking process difficult. It's recommended to verify pool availability upon arrival, even if you've booked, to avoid disappointment.
For those looking for a more straightforward swim, checking the schedule for public swim times and avoiding peak class hours is advisable. The centre also offers a gym and the Turkish Baths, which may have more consistent availability.
Portobello Beach and Coastal Charm
The beach is known for its wide sandy expanse and the colourful beach huts that line the promenade, providing picturesque backdrops for photos. It's a great place for a leisurely stroll, a picnic, or simply to relax and watch the waves. The sea swimming community is also active here, with many people enjoying cold water dips year-round.
Adjacent to the swim centre, you can also find remnants of the old outdoor pool, which has a unique, almost 'vaporwave' aesthetic that appeals to photographers and urban explorers. The promenade is dotted with cafes and ice cream shops, making it a perfect spot to round off your visit.
