⭐️ CAGE AROUND THE GUILDHALL ⭐️ Has Peterborough City Council gone stark raving mad? 😡 This cage is appalling. Put a gate or something to stop people using the stairs and room up top. The Labour Council are distracted by chaos and scandal. And it’s not good enough. Talk to me. I want to help 🙏

Reviews Summary

Visitors appreciate the Peterborough Guildhall as a well-preserved piece of history and an attractive architectural feature in the city centre. Its central location, especially its proximity to Peterborough Cathedral and the lively Cathedral Square with its seasonal fountains, is a significant draw. However, some note its limited accessibility and lack of current public use, describing it as a beautiful but somewhat isolated structure.

"A great well well-kept piece of history, surrounded by other historical buildings."

"Peterborough Guildhall, built between 1669 and 1671 as a market hall, is the former town hall of the city (1874-1933). You'll find it smack in the centre of Cathedral Square, next to St John the Baptist Church. There is nothing to be done than to simply look at it, or sit down and relax on the steps. The spiral staircases in the corners lead nowhere - at least nowhere tourists are allowed to go. But since, as a tourist, you'll be there to visit the magnificent Peterborough Cathedral, you will automatically "visit" the Guildhall, too. Good if limited photo opportunity of a piece of history, that's all."

"The famous Guildhall in Peterborough is located in the the city centre, surrounded by stores and restaurants. Events take place in the surrounding on a regular basis, such as the much anticipated Christmas Light Switch-on in December and Farmers Markets. The square also has a series of water fountains that, as night falls, are illuminated in a vibrant show. The fountains normally turned on during summer."

A Glimpse into History

The Peterborough Guildhall, constructed between 1669 and 1671, stands as a testament to the city's past. Originally built as a market hall, it later served as the town hall for Peterborough from 1874 until 1933. Its distinctive columned facade and central location in Cathedral Square make it a notable landmark. The building's current form is a result of restoration efforts in the early 1900s, preserving its historical character for visitors to admire today. Reddit

Interestingly, the Guildhall is described as 'oddly isolated' and 'tiny' by some locals, a stark contrast to the grand guildhalls found in other cities. This is attributed to the demolition of adjacent buildings in the early 19th century, leaving it standing somewhat alone. While it doesn't currently have a specific public function, the local council has explored creative uses for the space, aiming to integrate it more actively into city life. Reddit

Despite its limited internal access, the Guildhall remains an important part of Peterborough's historical fabric. It's a key visual element in Cathedral Square, often seen in conjunction with the magnificent Peterborough Cathedral, offering a picturesque backdrop for photos and a point of historical interest for visitors exploring the city centre.
