Reviews Summary

Visitors appreciate the historical significance of Newtownards Priory as the last Dominican friary ruin in Ulster and the unique integration of its old walls into modern structures. However, many express frustration over restricted access to the interior, often requiring specific arrangements or luck on Heritage Days.

"The abbey belonged to the Dominicans and is the only surviving ruin of that order in the modern province of Ulster. After suppression it became a courthouse. Suggestions that it was called Saint Columba's

Access was not possible because the key is with the Chamber of Commerce and the Tourist Office had no access. That is the reason for the miserable three stars.

The local people were friendly and helpful and showed where the old friary walls were now incorporated into the allotment walls behind the neighbouring houses. Locals made this worth a visit but sad that access is so restricted."

"Thankfully, the Dominican Friary at Court Square in Newtownards has been 'cleaned up' and restored over recent years: Ivy removed, sympathetic windows added, pathways cleaned etc. Sadly though, most days, it can only be viewed from the road....Doors are locked, except on Heritage Days and a few other dates in the year...sad really 😕"

The Historical Significance of the Dominican Friary

Newtownards Priory holds a special place in the history of religious orders in Northern Ireland. It is recognized as the only surviving ruin of the Dominican order in the modern province of Ulster. This makes it a historically significant site for understanding the reach and presence of religious communities in medieval Ireland. Reddit

Founded as a Dominican friary, the site later served a different purpose after the suppression of religious orders. It was repurposed and used as a courthouse, demonstrating the changing administrative and social landscape of the area over centuries. This dual history adds another layer of intrigue to the ruins. Reddit

The preservation efforts in recent years, including the removal of ivy and the addition of sympathetic windows, have helped to stabilize and present the structure. While access remains a challenge, the visible remnants continue to tell a story of monastic life, legal proceedings, and the enduring presence of history within Newtownards. Reddit
