"Very nice earth fort, a lot still to see considering it was built in the 1100s, it's free to go around and dog friendly, the view from the top are stunning, it's about 10mins walk from the village centre"

"If you're passing Nether Stowey on the A39 (in either direction), it's well worth diverting in to the village to see the castle remains. It's an old motte and bailey castle and has great views of the surrounding countryside (and Hinkley Point - of interest to locals). You should be able to park up easily enough and the walk is not long or particularly steep.

If you're stopped in the village already and are taking in the Coleridge Museum (writer Samuel Coleridge) or at the Ancient Mariner, the castle is just a few minutes walk away.

Our ancient hillforts and castles are dotted across Somerset. Stop in and see one. Get some fresh air and a bit of exercise and take in the magnificent views.

This one is completely free to visit. You can even bring your dog up there."

"Lovely views. A little hard to spot entrance. Worth parking in the town and walking up as it’s a pretty town."

The 'motte' is the artificial mound, and the 'bailey' was the enclosed courtyard. Though much of the stonework has long since eroded, the impressive earthworks remain, offering a tangible connection to medieval life and strategic defenses. Visitors can still discern the shape of the original fortifications, imagining the castle that once stood guard over the landscape. Reddit

These earthworks are a testament to the strategic importance of the location. The views from the top, stretching across the Somerset countryside and towards the Bristol Channel, would have provided excellent vantage points for spotting approaching threats. It's a fascinating place to ponder the history of the region and the lives of those who inhabited it centuries ago. Reddit
