Visitors find the Market Cross Butter Market an interesting and iconic historic building in Barnard Castle, appreciating its unique octagonal design and past roles. Some note it looks a bit rundown but remains an impressive landmark.
"Interesting historic building in Barnard Castle. Unfortunately it's now part of a roundabout in the main road."

"A beautiful octagonal building that stands on a roundabout at a busy road junction in the centre of town. It looks a bit rundown and moss covered in places, but it's still an impressive landmark. Farmers' wives used to sell their dairy produce here, hence its name. The building has also at various times in the past served as the town hall, courthouse, jail and fire station. Had to brave heavy traffic to get a close look at it, but the view from inside the veranda down the steep high street and out into the countryside was well worth the effort. It would have been an even better view from the top of the bell tower, but it's closed to the public."
