"We happened to time our visit to the Turner Contemporary to coincide with a very low tide. On our way to the gallery we found Margate harbour entirely drained of sea water, I've never seen it like that before. We walked across it and amongst the small boats. Once in the gallery we spotted the iron man, finished looking around and went to investigate.

This stunning artwork is well worth a closer look. The many years of being submerged and revealed twice a day have created a beautiful patina across his surface. Thick layers of barnacles and small whisps of seaweed cover him head to toe. The predictions that boats would strike him, or vandles move him have not materialised. It's just stunning as it is.

It says don't walk up to him, but of course we ignored those over cautious signs. Yeah, there might not be an accessible walkway with handrails, but the seaside is full of slightly risky adventures anyway. He is bolted down and set in concrete at the end of a long gone pier. There are 1m wide concrete structures you can walk down, suitable for anybody steady on their feet. Well worth a visit."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Art of 'Another Time'

Sir Antony Gormley's 'Another Time' is a striking installation comprising 26 cast-iron figures, each a life-size mould of the artist himself. These figures are strategically placed along coastlines around the world, with the Margate installation featuring one figure on Fulsam Rock. The sculpture is designed to engage with its environment, becoming a part of the landscape and a subject of the sea's constant flux. Instagram

The placement on Fulsam Rock means the sculpture is only visible for approximately three hours before and after low tide. This ephemeral nature adds to its mystique, transforming it from a solid form into a fleeting apparition. The iron has weathered over time, developing a rich patina and becoming a substrate for barnacles and seaweed, further integrating it with the marine ecosystem. Reddit

Visitors are encouraged to walk out to the sculpture during low tide, offering a unique opportunity to connect with the artwork and the natural surroundings. The experience is often described as profound and thought-provoking, prompting reflection on humanity's place within the vastness of nature. Reddit+1
