"We have just enjoyed the most delightful afternoon in Porthgain, eating fish & chips at The Shed, a coast path walk with the woofer and a delicious ice cream! No supper for us tonight! Many different skies over the harbour in just a few hours! Low tide. It’s peaceful even though there were plenty of visitors, and is a charming, unassuming tucked away little haven."

Peta Butcher

"Stunning harbour, with an incredible history. It's industrial past started with exporting slate, then turning to brickmaking, and lastly to crushed Broadstone. Large brick hoppers dominate the harbour. The stones were used to build the UKs road network. It all ceased in 1931. The harbour has sufficient car parking and about 2 electric car charging points, and free toilets. There are also some galleries, and a couple of restaurants."

David Wright

"Really nice place to visit. Plenty of parking. Easy to find and good roads. Small cafe to get food
Nice place to park and walk further afield. Interesting place to look around."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

A Glimpse into Porthgain's Industrial Past

Porthgain Harbour wasn't always a tranquil haven for visitors; it was once a bustling industrial port. Its history is deeply intertwined with the export of local stone and slate. The large, imposing stone storage hoppers that still dominate the harbour are a testament to this era, now recognized as a Scheduled Ancient Monument. Instagram

Originally, the harbour facilitated the export of slate quarried nearby. Later, its focus shifted to crushed stone from the Broadstone quarry, which was crucial for building roads across the UK. This industrial activity ceased in 1931, leaving behind the unique landscape we see today. The remnants of this past add a fascinating layer to the harbour's charm, offering a stark contrast to its current peaceful atmosphere. Reddit

Visitors can still see the impressive infrastructure that supported this trade. Exploring these structures provides a tangible connection to Porthgain's working heritage. It's a reminder of the hard work and industry that shaped this picturesque corner of Pembrokeshire. Instagram
