What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors generally praise the Llandudno Cable Car for its breathtaking panoramic views and the unique experience of riding Britain's longest cable car system. However, long queues and the cash-only payment policy are frequently cited drawbacks, especially during busy periods or when wind restrictions limit capacity.
"The Llandudno Cable Car, located in the seaside town of Llandudno, North Wales, is a popular attraction that transports visitors from Happy Valley Gardens up to the summit of the Great Orme headland. Opened in 1969, it's billed as the longest passenger cable car system in Britain, spanning about a mile and offering a roughly 18-minute round-trip ride. It's a seasonal operation, typically running from March to October, weather permitting, and costs around £15 per adult for a return ticket (family options available).
You can get a stunning views including 360-degree sights of Llandudno Bay, Snowdonia, Conway, and the surrounding coastline."

"Note: They only accept cash for tickets
We took a ride on the cable car from the bottom to the Summit. It was very busy and they were only letting 2 adults on each cable car. There was a sign saying this was due to high winds/crosswinds. At the bottom it also said the last return trip was at 2pm, but whilst in the long queue to come back we heard that it would probably be open until 5:30pm. Be prepared to queue for a long time, there are no indicators of how long you may be waiting.
The cable cars are quite smooth and views of the surrounding area are good. Note the videos I have included are time lapsed just to show a bit more of the journey.
It is possible to walk back or catch the tram back to do some of the journey to the bottom. There was also a sightseeing bus in the car park at the summit.
It was a bit hazy on the day we visited but you could still make out Anglesey from the Summit. At the Summit there is a gift shop, cafe and bar.
We parked at the Ski centre ( £2 for 6hours ) and walked down the fairly steep hill to the cable car station."

"Almost great experience. Queueing up was the least favourite part of the cable car ride. We came during the bank holiday, therefore we felt like every single tourist decided to visit this place. Views picturesque"

The Great Orme: More Than Just a View
At the summit, you'll find more than just stunning views. There's a visitor centre, a gift shop, and a cafe where you can refuel. For those who enjoy a walk, numerous walking trails crisscross the headland, offering opportunities to explore its rugged beauty up close. The summit complex also includes a small bar, providing a place to relax and soak in the atmosphere.
Historically, the Great Orme has been a site of human activity for thousands of years, with evidence of Bronze Age copper mines discovered here. This rich history adds another layer of fascination to the area. Whether you're interested in the views, the nature, or the history, the Great Orme offers a multifaceted experience beyond just the cable car ride itself.
Navigating the Llandudno Cable Car Experience
A crucial piece of advice from visitors is to check the wind conditions before heading out. High winds are the primary reason for cancellations or reduced capacity (often limited to two people per car), which can lead to very long queues. Be prepared for these potential delays and consider having a backup plan. The cash-only policy for tickets is another important detail to remember; ensure you have sufficient cash on hand.
For those looking for alternative ways to experience the Great Orme, consider the Great Orme Tramway, which offers a different, yet equally scenic, journey. Alternatively, you can walk back down the hill or explore the summit area on foot. The sightseeing bus at the summit car park is also an option for exploring further afield.
