What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors find Lancing College Chapel to be a grand and impressive architectural marvel, especially appreciating its free entry and the scenic views it offers. While some note the lack of extensive historical depth due to its relatively recent construction, the beauty of the Victorian Gothic Revival style and the opportunity to attend services with beautiful choir singing are frequently highlighted positives. The sign-in process and potential public transport difficulties are minor drawbacks for some.
"The chapel is open for the public to visit. Getting there involves some driving on some tricky roads and then driving for 5 minutes through the grounds of Lancing College where you can park for free in the main car park. It's then a 3-4 walk to the chapel. There are no staff there to welcome you or explain anything. Visitors can use toilets in the College reception opposite the Chapel.
Being relatively recently built, there is not really much interesting history to see inside and and visitors are required to spend 5 minutes signing in to an electronic device and have their photo taken by it.
Lancing College Chapel is a grand, impressive building and it's nice that it's totally free to visit, but I think seeing it from the outside is good enough (it is a prominent feature of the landscape so you can see it for miles around)."

"Visited here in August 2022 for a flower festival which was amazing. Added greatly to the ambience of rhe Chapel depicting links of the College. Beautiful building with new porch (April 2022)"
Marjorie Gale
"Saw it in the distance when driving, quite imposing, had to visit. Free parking at the school and free to enter here. Had a little guided tour from a lovely gent, explaining the history of the chapel."

Architectural Significance
While not an ancient monument, its relative recency allows for a different kind of appreciation. Visitors often comment on its impressive presence and the beauty of its design, even if the historical narrative is less extensive than older cathedrals. The chapel's imposing silhouette against the landscape is a key part of its appeal, visible from afar and drawing visitors to explore its interior.
For those interested in architecture, the chapel offers a chance to study Victorian craftsmanship and design principles. The interior, though perhaps lacking the centuries of accumulated history found elsewhere, is nevertheless a space of considerable beauty and spiritual resonance, particularly when enhanced by events like flower festivals or musical performances.
Visitor Experience & Practicalities
Parking is conveniently located in the main car park, and from there, it's a short, pleasant 3-4 minute walk to the chapel itself. Toilet facilities are available in the College reception area, located opposite the chapel, ensuring basic visitor needs are met.
While the chapel is free to enter, donations are highly encouraged to support its ongoing maintenance and preservation. These contributions are vital for keeping such a magnificent building accessible to the public. The lack of on-site staff for welcoming or explaining can mean visitors explore at their own pace, relying on signage or personal observation.
