Hume Castle in the Scottish Borders. This castle is PACKED with history and stands as an example of one of the earliest castle types in Scotland with a rectangular courtyard plan, unusual in the South. Hume Castle in the Scottish Borders near Kelso is probably the coolest folly I’ve visited on my travels around Scotland. Its origins can be traced back to the early 13th century. Its history is long an turbulent. The castle was attacked many times over the years, due to the key role it played as a defensive site in the Borders. It’s been occupied by the English, recaptured by the Scots, hosted ...

"This is well worth a visit , the castle now is a late 18th century folly built on the footprint of a medieval keep , the views from the ramparts are extensive and stunning . There is a lot to see here in and around the castle both historic and wildlife . There is a small car park and some excellent guide books to be found there . I would consider it a must visit place when in the area and will be going back again ."

John Isaacs

"Not a real castle, but a folly built on the foundations of an old fortress. Still worth a visit, for the beautiful scenery, the view, or for a picnic on a dry day. Parking is available near the castle (there are a few spaces)."

Roy Wassink

"Fantastic views from Hume Castle.

There is a small free carpark that allows up to two hours of parking for castle visitors only. I was the only one there on a Thursday in April. The castle doesn’t take long to look at so I cannot imagine this place gets busy. There are no facilities.

There was a detailed leaflet available in the carpark giving a history of the castle and the village.

Inside the castle walls there is a donation box."
