Reviews Summary

Visitors consistently praise Holmwood House for its unique Alexander 'Greek' Thomson architecture and the exceptional quality of the guided tours, which bring the house's history and design to life. The charming tearoom and the proximity to Linn Park are also highlighted as enjoyable aspects of the visit. While some find the house itself small and the gardens modest, the overall experience is highly recommended for its architectural significance and engaging insights.

"Holmwood is a fascinating place and the guided tour we had was outstanding. The guide was a real expert on the work of Alexander 'Greek' Thomson, and pointed out so many details that we would never have noticed. Particularly fascinating information about the way he blended local references and familiar styles with the 'exotic' colours and motifs he took from Greek, Egyptian, Assyrian etc cultures. Also good on the tricks used to make the house appear bigger, such as fake doors. The guide was very engaging too, and the tour was well adapted for non-disabled visitors and for the disabled guests who happened to be part of our small group. The cafe is really nice, and though the garden is not very exciting, the adjacent Linn Park with riverside walk and waterfalls is well worth a visit."

"Although this is a small house and the gardens are totally underwhelming it is certainly worth an hour of your time.
Unfortunately there is very little information in the house so if you are to get any benefit from the visit the guided tour is a must. They are run hourly.
We arrived mid tour but the coffees and cakes were delicious which filled in the time.
The house's architect was Alexander Thompson, a prominent Victorian whose designs are seen all over Glasgow.
Viewing the house with a guide brings it all to life.
The rooms are beautifully proportioned and decorated in the Greek style."

Jocelyn Twose

"Popped in on a rainy day. There isn’t a huge amount to see unless you’re especially interested in architecture, but the house has some nice details. Staff were friendly, and the small café, though limited, was quite tasty.
A pleasant little visit if you're nearby. Around an hour or so is enough."
