What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors praise the stunning and extensive gardens, often highlighting the engaging Winnie the Pooh trail for children. The castle's historical significance is also a draw. However, some find the entry price and on-site food options to be expensive for the value received.
"Absolutely stunning walks. Beautiful everywhere you look. Bought our tickets online as public holiday just to be on the safe side. Easy parking and scan straight in.
Great cafes and toilets all over are very clean and fresh. Kids Absolutely loved it
Spent the whole day here. I bought a picnic, weather was on our side. Honestly so glad I finally came here. Highly recommended to the ones that love the outdoors"

"Arrived with plenty of parking available and easy to find a space. Visited the cafe first and to grab a quick snack. Felt like queuing up in a canteen in one big line whether you want hot food or not and it felt very congested. Once you get through it all and pay there are plenty of tables to sit and enjoy your food with some outside also but be wary of all the wasps!
After, we headed to pay into the gardens, we didn’t do the castle this time. It is expensive enough but there are concessions available. The gardens are very well kept and probably one of the best around considering how vast it is. Easy to follow map for the different areas and they even had a Winnie the Pooh honey pot hunt on with storytelling for the kids which was a nice touch.
There’s also a cafe near the main house and a Lick ice cream hut, but it is very expensive and the ice cream scoops are tiny! A vast difference to the one in Newcastle.
The gift store has plenty of touristy trinkets to buy but it’s so expensive and the quality of many of the items look poorly made.
Overall a nice day out but it just didn’t warranty 5 stars given the price and value for money."

"Booked my ticket online and enjoyed "kids enter the gardens free" during the Holidays. The receptionists were both absolutely lovely and helpful and helped us get sorted for the Hunny Trail hunt. This was a great incentive for my 6year old who probably would not have wanted to walk the full extent of the garden. But the trail is brilliantly laid out so all the gorgeous landmarks are seen and some hidden trails are discovered by the kids. It's a pram/stroller friendly walk but there are hills to climb, so comfortable walking shoes is a must.
Michael was a brilliant story teller and had parents and kids involved in the tale (but no spoilers, go see for yourself) .
We stopped afterward for a teatime treat (and a coffe for mum!) and sat next to a bed of flowers literally humming with bees, bumble bees and butterflies.
The trail and hunt was so much fun, I forgot to look for the hidden play area🤭
The restrooms were all impeccably clean...a definite must when adventuring with littles.
I can't wait to go back and tour the castle."

Dining and Refreshments: What to Expect
An ice cream hut is also available, but it's been noted as particularly expensive with small scoops, leading some to feel it doesn't offer great value for money.
