What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors are captivated by the sheer majesty of The Drake Stone and the breathtaking panoramic views from its summit. The hike, while sometimes strenuous and boggy, is considered well worth the effort. Some mention the potential for wind and the need to check military firing times as minor considerations.
"The Drake Stone is an obvious landmark as you drive along the road to Harbottle village. It is said to be the biggest boulder in Northumberland and weigh about 2,000 tons. It is an 'erratic rock'; it was carried to its present position by a glacier, then dumped on top of the ridge.
'Drake' might be a corruption of 'Draag' or Dragon stone, though no-one seems to know how it got its name. It is supposed to have magical healing powers; in the past children were passed over the stone to heal them of various illnesses. People who spend the night on the stone are supposedly unable to leave it in the morning.
Easy parking in Harbottle Woods car park, follow the signs, takes about 30 minutes
Can be strenuous for some, narrow and boggy path in places and be aware as it sits on the edge of Otterburn Range, there is usually gun fire echoing around here"

"Absolutely marvellous !
Not a long distance from the car parks; Harbottle castle and Forestry commission both have one, but a taxing uphill climb.
Well worth it as a 360 panorama from the top with views of Harbottle lake is breathtakingly beautiful !!
NB You can go round the right side of the hill, as though visiting the lake, and then a gentler incline gets you to the top !"

"Was a bit windy on Saturday the 8 June, when we went up to have a look at a stone on top of a hill. It didn't put me off have a climb to the top of Drake's stone though, even the fact that I thought the wind was going to send me to the ground below the hill Drake stone sits on never mind the earth under the Stone. I even laid down on the top to get out of the blowing relentless wind. Don't be put off by this experience,as that only half the story. The views are amazing, the feeling of getting up there and it being on top of the world made it worth while. Even had the company of a few climbers who had popped up there for an afternoon,to have a climbing session. So want to go back and do a bit more walking in that area."
