"The Hanwell Locks are a historical flight of old canal boat locks on Grand Union Canal that are still functional.
Look closely and you will find plaques on each set of locks that indicate the year it was built.
This is an attractive section of the canal, forming part of the 2000 miles of canals under the care of the Rivers and Canals Trust. Here at each lock you will find a lock keeper’s cottage, who, in the 1700s and 1800s, before good and supplies were moved by train, would assist the travelling boatmen move through the locks with their barges of goods. The cottages are charming and still lived in!
A wide towpath beside the canal allows for walkers, runners, cyclists and dog walkers to enjoy the beautiful canal and countryside. We visited on a sunny day in May and enjoyed the scenery very much.
You can often find a rentable electric bike along the way as well. A great place to stop just off the canal is The Fox pub, great food in a large and friendly garden often with live music."
