Sitting at the edge of Edinburgh’s Greyfriars Kirkyard, you’ll see a unique and initially unassuming tomb. This tomb is now permanently locked… but that lock is not to protect the tomb from visitors - it’s to protect visitors from what’s in the tomb… #Scotland #scottish #Edinburgh #lovescotland

The problem with a great story is that sometimes it can be difficult to separate fact from fiction. Historian Dr Jan Bonderson has unearthed some evidence to suggest the loveable Bobby might in fact have been two different dogs. Neither of which belonged to John Gray.. Regardless, the message of the famous story behind Greyfriars Bobby is one worth celebrations and keeping alive. If you do visit ...

Reviews Summary

Visitors find Greyfriars Kirkyard to be a deeply atmospheric and historically rich site, particularly appealing to Harry Potter fans and those interested in local legends like Greyfriars Bobby. While the beauty and historical significance are widely praised, some note that it can become crowded, and the solemn nature of a graveyard requires respectful behavior.

"Hidden away in one of the "Rows," the only thing to guide you here is a small tourist information direction sign.

The site appears to have been part of a large structure that has fallen into complete disrepair.

English Heritage has taken it on, and the site is closed off to the public, although you can see parts through the fencing, and there are a few notice boards giving some brief explanation of the intended conservation work.

I suspect that it will prove to be too difficult to do any major restoration; hopefully, though, they will be able to save at least some of the structure."

Anthony Sutcliffe

"Undergoing restoration, it's an unattended building site waiting for funding. It's rare, old and part of Gt Yarmouths heritage sadly in decline."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Legend of Greyfriars Bobby

The heartwarming tale of Greyfriars Bobby is central to the kirkyard's fame. Bobby was a Skye Terrier who, after his owner John Gray's death in 1858, reputedly spent 14 years guarding his master's grave. A statue of Bobby now stands as a beloved landmark just outside the kirkyard gates. While the story is widely cherished, some historians suggest the legend might be embellished, with evidence pointing to the possibility of two different dogs or that Bobby may not have belonged to John Gray at all. Regardless of the historical accuracy, the story of Bobby's loyalty continues to capture hearts. TikTok

This enduring legend draws many visitors, making the statue a popular photo opportunity and a symbol of unwavering devotion. It's a touching reminder of the bond between humans and their animal companions, adding a layer of poignant sentiment to the historic graveyard. TikTok

Harry Potter Connections

Greyfriars Kirkyard has become a pilgrimage site for Harry Potter fans due to its atmospheric tombstones, some of which bear names that inspired characters in J.K. Rowling's beloved series. Most famously, the grave of William McGonagall, a Scottish poet, shares a surname with Professor Minerva McGonagall, and the tomb of Thomas Riddell (an older spelling of Riddle) is often cited as the inspiration for Lord Voldemort's name. TikTok

Exploring the kirkyard, you can wander among the ancient stones and imagine the magical world that these names helped to create. It's a unique way to connect with the books and films, adding an extra layer of enchantment to the already historic setting. Many guided tours focus specifically on these literary connections, offering a deeper dive into the inspiration behind the wizarding world. TikTok+1

The Mysterious Cappe Tomb

One of the most intriguing features within Greyfriars Kirkyard is the Cappe Tomb. This imposing, dark stone tomb is permanently locked, fueling local legends and speculation. The lock is not to keep people out, but rather, as some tales suggest, to keep whatever is inside in. TikTok

While the exact contents or purpose of the tomb remain a mystery, its locked state and gothic appearance contribute significantly to the kirkyard's reputation for being one of the most haunted places in Edinburgh. It's a focal point for ghost tours and adds an element of eerie fascination for visitors. TikTok+1
