Reviews Summary

Visitors consistently praise Allan Bank for its exceptionally laid-back and welcoming atmosphere, making it feel more like a cozy home than a formal attraction. The beautiful woodland walks, opportunities to spot red squirrels, and stunning Grasmere views are major highlights. While the house itself is described as basic, its charm lies in its informality and the friendly staff. Some note the lack of a traditional cafe, but the donation-based refreshments are appreciated.

"Possibly my favourite NT property. It’s so laid back, you can grab yourself a cup of coffee (donations welcome) and wonder around the house with it, or make use of the seating anywhere in the house. Informative panels and displays throughout, with contemporary exhibitions upstairs. Dogs are welcome in the house downstairs, and in the woodland trail too of course. The trail is outstanding, although definitely a bit of work. Cycle parking on site at the rear of the house."

"NT Allan Bank was the perfect venue for our intimate DIY wedding. The house is beautiful and set in a wonderful location with stunning views, extensive grounds, and wildlife including red squirrels. We loved the cosy family atmosphere, as well as the venue’s versatility and charm, it has character! Annabel, Heather, Chris and the NT team were so friendly, helpful, and accommodating throughout the entire process, from our initial enquiry to the post wedding day tidy up. We couldn’t have done it without them and are so grateful for all their advice and support. We’re so happy that Allan Bank has become a special place for us and that we can continue to visit throughout our life. It was just wonderful and we would recommend it in an instant to anyone getting married. It is also a lovely place to visit with family and explore the grounds on a day out in Grasmere!"

He lived here with his family from 1808 to 1811, finding inspiration in the surrounding fells and landscapes. While the house today is furnished to reflect a more informal, lived-in feel rather than a strict historical recreation of Wordsworth's time, its connection to the poet adds a layer of cultural significance to any visit. Visitors can learn about his life and work through informative panels and displays scattered throughout the property. Instagram

A Haven for Wildlife

The grounds of Allan Bank are a vibrant ecosystem, particularly known for being a sanctuary for red squirrels. These charming creatures can often be spotted scampering along the dry stone walls and through the trees of the woodland trails. Rangers actively monitor and protect the local red squirrel population, making Allan Bank a fantastic spot for nature enthusiasts and photographers hoping to catch a glimpse of them. Instagram The gardens also benefit from the care of dedicated gardeners, who share tips on improving soil health and encouraging blooms. Instagram

An Informal and Welcoming Atmosphere

Unlike many historic houses, Allan Bank prides itself on its relaxed and informal atmosphere. It's designed to feel less like a museum and more like visiting a friend's cozy home. Visitors are encouraged to make themselves comfortable, whether that means reading a book by the fire, playing board games, or simply enjoying the views with a cup of tea. This approach makes it particularly appealing for families, as children are welcome to explore and move around freely without the usual restrictions. InstagramReddit
