"Stepping into Goddards at Greenwich is like walking into a piece of London’s history. Open since 1890, the establishment perfectly preserves a lovely old-school feel, offering a truly traditional and quintessential Pie and Mash experience. This is not just a meal; it’s a cultural immersion into a time-honoured British classic.
The main event, the handmade pie and mash, certainly lives up to the shop's legacy. The crust was excellent and the mash creamy, serving as a robust foundation for the meal. I found the filling, while generously portioned, to be a bit under-seasoned for my personal taste. Thankfully, this was easily remedied with a little salt, which brought the flavours right to the fore. Sometimes, in a traditional setting like this, a touch of personal adjustment is all it takes!
In terms of dining experience, the service was fantastic. Despite the quick turnover, the staff were warm, welcoming, and attentive. They ensured the process was efficient without ever feeling rushed.
If you are looking for an authentic taste of London, Goddards is the place to be. It’s a nostalgic and comforting spot that remains a vital part of the Greenwich culinary landscape, delivering tradition with quick, warm service."

"What a great find in Greenwich. Good value for money food that was great tasting.
After a fun Thames ferry ride to Greenwich in weather that vacillated between sunshine and rain - yes in that short period - we found this quaint traditional pies and mah place for lunch.
A pie and mash for £7 and double pie and mash for £9!!
We sat in the upper floor at the window that provided a nice view with fresh windy air.
The traditional pies were yummy with generous servings of mash and peas. The gravy was delicious.
We had the apple crumble with vanilla ice cream that was warm and tasty.
Certainly warmed up the wet start to our visit to Greenwich."

"Pie and Mash is a traditional English working-class food, originating in the Docks of London. I had the Double Double with Liquor which is 2 pies and 2 mash, the liquor is parsley sauce . Very filling delicious food tastes even better when you add the chilli vinegar. Was stuffed. Staff were friendly. Nice cosy cafe. They had 2 floors so I went upstairs. Will definitely come again and try one of their deserts"

In-depth insights and expert knowledge
The History of Pie and Mash
This dish is more than just food; it's a cultural experience. The simplicity of the ingredients – pastry, minced beef, mashed potatoes, and parsley sauce – belies its historical significance. Many Londoners have grown up with it, and visiting a place like Goddard's offers a tangible connection to that heritage. The presence of jellied and stewed eels further emphasizes the traditional, and for some, adventurous, nature of this culinary practice.
While some modern palates might find the traditional seasoning subtle, many visitors appreciate the authentic taste and the opportunity to try something truly historic. The addition of chilli vinegar is a popular way to add a personal touch and a kick to the meal, a practice that has become almost as iconic as the dish itself.
Experiencing Greenwich Market
Exploring Greenwich Market before or after your meal at Goddard's is highly recommended. You can find unique souvenirs, sample international cuisines, and soak in the lively atmosphere. The market's energy is infectious, and it provides a wonderful contrast to the historic, sit-down meal you'll enjoy at the pie shop.
Be sure to wander through the various sections of the market. You might discover handmade jewelry, vintage clothing, or even some local produce. It's a great place to spend an hour or two, making your visit to Greenwich a well-rounded cultural outing.
The Eels Debate: Jellied vs. Stewed
Stewed eels, on the other hand, are cooked in a rich, savory sauce, offering a warmer and more conventionally 'saucy' experience. While some find the idea of eating eels off-putting, many who try them at Goddard's are pleasantly surprised by the flavor, often described as mild and slightly sweet. It's a dish that has been enjoyed for generations and remains a significant part of the pie and mash tradition.
If you're feeling brave, consider ordering a portion of eels alongside your pie and mash. It's an experience that many visitors remember and talk about long after their meal. Whether you love them or find them an acquired taste, they are an integral part of Goddard's historical offering.
