What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors often find Gelligaer Roman Fort to be a site rich in historical significance but lacking in visible ruins, requiring imagination to appreciate its past. While some are disappointed by the lack of standing structures, others appreciate the informative displays and the peaceful rural setting. It's best suited for those interested in archaeology and the story behind the landscape.
"Such a shame the site was dug up and stoned used for other purposes leaving just a field and a few bumps. Good information boards and a slightly broken display you can look through to see what it would have been like.
It'd be great if it could be rebuilt and used as a hotel, but I guess this site is destined to just be used to keep horses."
Kevin Arscott (The Walking Kev)
"Gelligaer is an ancient community with a Roman past that was hidden until Edwardian archaeologists started to excavated Gaer Fawr and Gaer Fach and confirmed that there was a Roman Fort hidden beneath the grass.
Really nothing to see, farmers land with horses on it, you can't even get on the field, there are a few notice boards for you to read, but that's about it."
Pete / Hel
"You will need to use you imagination to visualuse the fort but there are facilities to help with this. Another example of the richness of ancient Welsh/ Gymraeg history/ hanes. More evidence of the tough time the Romans had in South Wales."

The History of Gelligaer Roman Fort
The fort's layout, as understood from archaeological evidence, included typical Roman military structures such as ramparts, ditches, barracks, and possibly a commander's house. The fact that it was later abandoned and the land repurposed, with stones potentially used for other constructions, speaks to the changing fortunes of Roman Britain. Today, the site serves as a reminder of this ancient past, offering a tangible connection to Roman military presence in Wales.
Visitors can learn about the fort's history through the well-maintained information boards. These boards, along with the illustrative viewing panel, help to reconstruct the fort in the mind's eye, transforming the seemingly simple field into a place of historical importance. It's a testament to the enduring legacy of Roman occupation in Britain.
Understanding the Archaeological Site
The decision to preserve the site as an open landscape, rather than attempting a full reconstruction, allows visitors to appreciate the fort in its original context. The presence of grazing horses, while sometimes a point of contention for those expecting ruins, actually highlights the long history of human use of this land. The viewing panel is a clever way to bridge the gap between the past and present, offering a visual interpretation of what once stood there.
For those interested in Roman Britain, Gelligaer offers a different kind of experience. It's less about grand ruins and more about the subtle clues left behind by history. It encourages a deeper engagement with the landscape and a greater appreciation for the work of archaeologists in uncovering and interpreting these ancient sites.
