What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors consistently praise the Churnet Valley Railway for its authentic steam train experience, friendly volunteers, and beautiful scenery. The value for money on standard trips is frequently highlighted, alongside the enjoyable themed dining and special events. Some minor points of improvement include clearer roadside signage and potentially more ladies' facilities at stations.
"I booked a meal for my wife’s birthday. Not the railways fault, but roadside signage is poor, so satnav is a must. We got there in plenty of time for the afternoon train, not long after the morning train came in so parking was interesting, however it is free and it was was easy for my wife to get out prior to me parking up. At Froghall, it’s a new old style station with enough toilets for males but lacking a little for the ladies. The carriage was very comfortable and spacious. We sadly were on the wrong side for views of the river and canal in the first half of the journey, but on the right side for the engine sheds. The food was excellent, we did have to be pre order, no difficulty with the starter and mains, however the puddings were a case of ordering all 3 and then giving the ladies first choice. On the way back, as we went through Cheddleton tunnel the second time, the loco engineer made the steam engine chuff in an old fashioned style, it added to the ambiance and experience of the day. I’m going to be honest here, you could probably get a Sunday lunch at the nearby pub, then throw in a train journey for less, but the whole experience, with a feeling of going back to a more relaxed era was certainly worth the money. I will certainly look at rebooking in the new year"

"We attended one of the murder mystery nights which was set in the 1920s. We dressed up and I’m so glad we did as it enhanced our experience. The actors were amazing and so great at what they do. They brought the evening to life. We had a 3 course dinner with our experience and the food was fantastic with attentive staff. But I think the whole evening was made perfect by the train and the journey. The steam train was beautiful and full of character. I could not fault the evening and experience. Amazing, we will be back!!"

"Here’s a longer, friendly version of your Google review that “Had such a lovely day on the Churnet Valley train rides with my partner. From the moment we arrived, everyone was so friendly and welcoming, which made the whole experience feel really special. Even though it was a cold day, the carriages were cosy and the scenery along the valley was absolutely beautiful — so peaceful and relaxing to just sit back and enjoy the views.
We had warm drinks and some nice food on board, which made it even better. It’s definitely worth the money — in fact, it’s really cheap for what you get! A wonderful trip that’s perfect for couples, families, or anyone who enjoys a bit of nostalgia. We’ll definitely be going back again!”"
