"Wow, what a place! Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal Gardens completely blew me away. The abbey ruins are absolutely stunning – huge, dramatic, and full of atmosphere. You can just wander around and lose yourself in the history.

The gardens are gorgeous too – so beautifully designed with lakes, statues, little follies, and surprise viewpoints. Catching a glimpse of the abbey from across the water is like something out of a painting.

We also spotted deer in the park which was a bit of a treat! Loads of walking routes to choose from, so you can do a quick wander or spend the whole day exploring.

There’s also two good on-site cafes, one at the visitor centre, and one lakeside venue. There are also plenty of picnic spots if you bring your own. The whole place is spotless and really well looked after.

This was one of the best days out I’ve had in ages – peaceful, scenic, and full of history. It is also a World Heritage Site to boot, so you are in for a treat!"

"What an incredible place, if you are like myself you will need multiple trips to take in everything. We spent the entire day basically going around the ruins and didn't even get chance to go in the Hall or the deer park.

Stunning place and it is lovely to see it busy as well, and not to mention how well maintained it is.

English heritage and National Trust free entry which is a bonus. Highly recommended place to go and like I said maybe two days to explore the entire site properly but wow you won't regret it."

Damien Shepherd

"It's a magical place. The Abbey is large and it is in good condition considering it's hundreds of years old. You could spend quite sometime here enjoying the Abbey. There is alot to see on the estate."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The History of Fountains Abbey

Founded in 1132, Fountains Abbey was once one of the wealthiest Cistercian monasteries in England. Its dramatic ruins stand as a testament to its former grandeur and the turbulent history of the Dissolution of the Monasteries under Henry VIII. The sheer scale of the remaining structures, like the towering cellarium and the impressive church nave, allows visitors to imagine the daily lives of the monks who once inhabited this sacred space. Exploring the abbey is like stepping back in time, with every stone whispering tales of devotion, power, and eventual decline. Reddit

Adjacent to the abbey lies Studley Royal Water Gardens, a masterpiece of 18th-century landscape design. Created by William Aislabie, these gardens are a stark contrast to the monastic austerity, featuring a breathtaking series of canals, lakes, temples, and statues. The design cleverly uses the natural topography to create stunning vistas and hidden surprises, drawing the eye towards the abbey ruins from carefully chosen viewpoints. The interplay of water, architecture, and nature creates a truly magical and serene atmosphere. Reddit

Together, Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal form a UNESCO World Heritage Site, recognized for their outstanding universal value. This dual heritage, from medieval monasticism to Georgian garden artistry, offers a unique and comprehensive historical and aesthetic experience. Visitors often remark on the peaceful ambiance that pervades the entire estate, making it a perfect escape for reflection and appreciation of history and natural beauty. Reddit

Exploring Studley Royal Water Gardens

The Studley Royal Water Gardens are an absolute highlight, offering a different kind of beauty compared to the abbey ruins. Designed in the 18th century, these gardens are a prime example of English landscape gardening, characterized by sweeping lawns, serene lakes, and classical follies. The Serpentine Lake is a central feature, reflecting the sky and surrounding trees, creating a tranquil and picturesque scene. Visitors can wander along well-maintained paths, discovering hidden gems like the Temple of Piety and the Octagon Tower, each offering unique perspectives and photo opportunities. Reddit

A key element of the gardens is the clever use of water features. The canal, a long, straight waterway, leads the eye through the landscape, while the Seven Bridges offer charming crossings and picturesque views. The waterfowl that inhabit the lakes add to the serene atmosphere, and if you're lucky, you might even spot some of the resident deer from the adjacent park. The entire experience is designed to be a journey of discovery, with each turn revealing a new, beautifully composed scene. Reddit

While the gardens are largely accessible, some paths can be uneven or have steps, so it's worth checking the site's accessibility information if you have mobility concerns. The sheer scale and meticulous design of Studley Royal make it a place where you can easily spend hours simply soaking in the beauty and imagining the lives of those who created and enjoyed it centuries ago.
