"Such a great day out if you’re local or visiting the area! The staff were friendly and so helpful during the 45-60min tutorial before allowing you off down the river.
The boat came with fresh water, a gas hob, kettle and toilet"

"If you want to give a narrow boat holiday a try, then I can't recommend this company enough. As complete newbies we got a thorough explanation of the boat and a manual. We were given maps and route suggestions. There was even a point where we got ourselves stuck but we rang the emergency mobile number we were given and within 40mins, we had help to get us going again. They have free parking, the only downside is that it is a car ride/taxi away. For a couple of days, the walkable public car park is about the same or slightly dearer than a taxi. If the office is open, they can give you a lift.
The Wey itself is very pleasant to cruise along, with plenty of pubs to stop at but also quite a few locks to deal with. We stopped at the New Inn, which is the Saturday night stop for a short weekend trip. The menu choice and food was fantastic and the pub is right next to the canal moorings."

We will be back again for sure 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟"

The Narrowboat Experience
Key features of a narrowboat holiday include the opportunity to disconnect from the hustle and bustle of daily life and reconnect with nature. The boats are typically equipped with essential amenities like fresh water, a gas hob, and a toilet, making them suitable for short trips. For longer journeys, more comprehensive equipment is provided. The staff at Farncombe Boat House are known for their helpfulness, offering thorough tutorials and route suggestions to ensure a smooth and enjoyable trip for even complete novices.
Beyond the boat itself, the journey along the River Wey is a significant part of the charm. The waterway is described as tree-shaded and peaceful, offering opportunities to spot wildlife. The presence of numerous riverside pubs provides convenient and pleasant stops for meals and relaxation. This combination of self-sufficient living on the water and the exploration of scenic routes makes a narrowboat holiday a memorable adventure.
Navigating the Locks
Operating a manual lock involves a series of steps: entering the lock chamber, closing the lower gates, filling or emptying the chamber by opening paddles, and then opening the upper gates to proceed. While it requires some physical effort and coordination, the tutorial provided by Farncombe Boat House ensures you're well-prepared. Visitors often describe it as 'fun' and a 'sense of accomplishment.'
Specific locks, like Pyrford Lock, are even highlighted as a 'must do' experience, suggesting they are particularly picturesque or interesting to navigate. The process of working through these locks is an integral part of the slow-paced, engaging nature of canal travel, distinguishing it from faster modes of transport.
The River Wey vs. The Thames
The River Thames, while a major waterway, can be busier and more commercial, especially in certain sections. The Wey, in contrast, offers a more serene environment, ideal for those seeking relaxation and a closer connection with nature. The presence of numerous charming pubs along the Wey also adds to its appeal as a destination for a leisurely boat trip.
This distinction is important for potential visitors. If the goal is a quiet escape with opportunities for wildlife spotting and a relaxed pace, the River Wey is often the recommended choice. The Thames might be considered for those looking for a more dynamic journey or access to larger towns and cities, but for a quintessential peaceful narrowboat holiday, the Wey shines.
