What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Elford Walled Garden is widely praised as a beautifully maintained, volunteer-run community gem. Visitors appreciate the diverse garden areas, from the rose garden to the sensory paths, and the peaceful riverside setting. While entry is free, donations are highly valued to support the ongoing efforts of the dedicated volunteers.
"The gardens are free to enter, but donations are welcome. There is initially a large walled area containing mainly lawned and vegetable patches with a rose garden at one side.
Outside the wall is a quiet area with twisting pathways and places to sit and relax. There is also a large orchard containing many apple trees; we noticed that many apples lay on the ground as windfalls. It could be considered that local food banks would collect and make use of these rather than leaving them where they lie. Generally well maintained and looked after gardens which are worth a visit."

"Wonderful walled garden run by volunteers. I've seen many gardens run in this way and this is one of the best. Maintenance is good, people are friendly and lots of lovely plants. A bit of everything; allotments, formal areas, ponds, wildlife areas, riverside walk and much more. I will be back!"

"I recently visited the Elford Hall Garden Project in Staffordshire, and it left a profound impression. Once a neglected walled garden, since 2009 it has been lovingly reclaimed by volunteers and transformed into a vibrant community haven.
Visitors enjoy a rich variety of garden areas, including:
Allotments growing fruits and vegetables
A lush orchard and herb garden
Scenic flower borders and a fragrant rose garden
A sensory garden full of winding paths, bug hotels, mosaics and sculptures
Recreational spaces complete with boules courts, picnic areas, and giant chess.
A sheltered bothy where visitors can rest and enjoy drinks for a small donation
The garden also functions as a peaceful wildlife spot by the river, and even offers fishing pegs and tranquil nature views. It’s a serene sanctuary that invites both mindfulness and recreation.
The Elford Hall Garden Project is a hidden gem—a remarkable transformation by dedicated volunteers into a garden bursting with colour, heritage, and community. It's peaceful, lively, inclusive, and always evolving. Whether you're gardening, learning, relaxing, or celebrating, this space delivers.
Highly recommended for a peaceful day out, a meaningful volunteer experience, or simply time surrounded by beautiful and well-maintained gardens."
