Reviews Summary

Reviews for Waltham Cross are mixed, with some finding the town centre has deteriorated and lacks safety, while others appreciate the monument itself and local amenities. The Eleanor Cross is generally seen as a pretty and cool monument, offering a clean street with a brilliant view for some visitors. Reddit

"Waltham cross is an absolute dive. When my partner was growing up near that area, it was beautiful when I moved down there, it was okay, but you could see it deteriorating then (some 20 years ago now).

Now it's horrible, dirty, you don't feel safe, the town (for what it was) has died a slow death. It either needs a huge regeneration or it just needs to be out out of its misery and build much needed social housing there.

It's awful though."

The History of the Eleanor Cross

The Eleanor Cross in Waltham Cross is a Victorian monument erected in the 19th century. It stands as a tribute to Queen Eleanor of Castile, wife of King Edward I, who died in 1290. The original Eleanor Crosses were a series of twelve monumental crosses erected between 1291 and 1294 at locations where her body rested on its journey from Nottinghamshire to Westminster Abbey.

However, the Waltham Cross is not one of the original medieval crosses. It is a Victorian interpretation, built much later, reflecting a romanticized view of the past. This distinction is important for understanding its historical context. Reddit
