What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Dolygaer Outdoor Centre offers a scenic camping experience with great adventure activities and helpful instructors. However, visitors should be prepared for basic facilities, close-knit pitches, and significant midge issues, especially during peak times. The walk from the car park to pitches can also be a challenge with heavy gear.
"Although at first glance this is a great spot for camping, there were a few drawbacks from that we experienced. We booked riverside camping months in advance which we were looking forward to. Two members of our party that joined late with planning were told that they wouldn’t need to book, just show up on the day and pay because nobody else has booked during the time that we were booked to be there.
When arriving our site was taken by a Duke of Edinburgh group and we were given the “upgrade” of being further up the hill next to the car park. Although the view from the other campsite was beautiful, we were bummed about not having the site we planned on, being next to the river. The other site we were given was a strip of grass near all of the facilities which was handy.
The major downside that we experienced were the swarms of midges interfering with everything during sunset and through the night until the morning. I understand bugs can be expected during camping but it was seriously hard to ignore them which was definitely not the fault of the campsite itself or the staff that run it.
We had to cut our planned stay short from 3 nights down to 1. Props to the staff for giving us a refund for the remaining nights we had planned to stay there. Like other reviews have said, this area is more for hiking and activities outside of the scope of camping."

"Camping not great, pitches are small and cheek to cheek with neighbours so little privacy or peace. Not at all ideal for large tent. Small tents only.
Great they have free fire pits!
Long track down hill away from car, so carrying all equipment as single mum was tough.
Sheep poo everywhere , got in tent and toilets.
Map of site barley visible on print out , so didn't know where anything was.
No recycling bin on reservoir view and bins over flowing.
No electric hook up, no plugs to charge phone or use a hair dryer etc. Didn't know there was a fridge for use, but this is only reception hours.
Shop not well stocked for campers wanting to cook, no fresh products.
No sinks for teeth brushing and grooming, just small hand basins for washing hands.
No hot water for washing up
Showers not great, curtains and no private cubicles.
Sorry to be so negative, I usually love camping but this place really doesn't cater for families on a longer trip. Probably more ideal for one or two nights max.
Dissapointing family holiday because of Facilities. We left a day early."

"We had a great one night camping stay and then did canoeing and ziplining the next day.
Pro: our instructor Harry was great. Calming the nerves of us all during the zip line. Infectious confident. Thank you.
Location is great but accessible and price is good. Facilities are good and clean.
We could pack down our tent after the activities as long as we were off the pitch by 3pm. However the people who had booked our pitch after us arrived early so felt rushed to try to get packed up.
The picnic table and fire pit.
Cons: took a bit of time to sign in and complete the medical forms which ate into our activity time. We only had 45 mins on the water for canoeing.
Not being able to park next to the tent but they have wheelbarrow you can borrow. Just a bit of a mission.
The midgets! Take bug spray.
The pitches felt closed in.
No flat areas close to pitch for kids to play football.
Overall, this was my second time staying and loved it."

Navigating Camping Pitches and Facilities
The facilities are described as basic. Washing-up sinks are available but lack hot water, meaning you might need to bring a kettle to heat water for cleaning. Showers are functional but can be small, and some reviews compare them to school facilities, noting a lack of private cubicles or hooks. The on-site shop is not extensively stocked for campers needing to cook full meals, so planning to bring most of your provisions is advisable.
Despite these points, many visitors appreciate the charm of the site and the helpfulness of the staff. The key is to manage expectations regarding the level of comfort and privacy. Understanding these aspects beforehand can help ensure a more enjoyable camping experience.
Embracing the Outdoor Activities
While the activities themselves are a highlight, some visitors have noted that the time allocated can feel short. For instance, a 45-minute slot for canoeing might feel rushed, especially after the initial sign-in and medical form completion, which can eat into scheduled activity time. It's worth confirming the exact duration of each activity when booking to manage your expectations and schedule your day accordingly.
For those looking to maximize their experience, booking activities in conjunction with a camping stay can be a great option. However, be mindful of check-out times if you plan to participate in activities on your departure day, as you may need to pack down your tent before heading out.
Dealing with the Local Wildlife (and Insects!)
The most significant natural challenge reported by visitors is the presence of midges, particularly during sunset and through the night until morning. These swarms can be intense and interfere with outdoor activities and relaxation. It's crucial to pack strong insect repellent and consider additional measures like midge nets for your tent to make your stay more comfortable. While not the fault of the campsite, being prepared for these insects is essential for a positive experience.
