Visitors rave about Dinorwig Quarry's stunning, otherworldly landscapes and the sheer scale of the abandoned slate workings. Many highlight the breathtaking views and the thrill of discovering hidden gems like waterfalls. While the beauty is undeniable, some caution that the terrain can be steep and slippery, requiring good footwear and careful navigation.

"I absolutely loved this place. It was so amazing and the location was beyond stunning. Parking was fine and the walk to the quarry was a well laid path. The main path through the quarry is all sectioned off and bits are steep. I would recommend to everyone it's a must visit and we will definitely be going again."

Rachel Harris-Jones

"Great place for a walk/hike! Beautiful views and scenery especially on a clear day. Is steep in places and the slate can be slippy underfoot so take care. Wear a good pair of walking boots 👍🏼"

Karla

"Been here for the second time now exploring different routes. A historic and beautiful place in Wales to explore with plenty of adventures. Originally walking up from the bottom and the second time parked along the top and explored the top.

i will definitely be retuning here. I would say the bottom path is definitely family friendly with places to sit and have some lunch and a nice relaxing walk where you can see the old exposed equipment.

You can also visit the caves via the bottom path and there is also caves along the top too!"

Visitors can wander through these vast spaces, imagining the lives of the quarrymen who once worked here. The area offers a sense of adventure and discovery, with hidden nooks and crannies to explore. TikTokInstagram+1

Many visitors are drawn to the quarry for its hiking opportunities. The terrain is varied, ranging from relatively flat lower paths near the Slate Museum to steep, challenging ascents higher up. History and Industrial Heritage

Dinorwig Quarry, operational from 1787 to 1969, was once the second-largest slate quarry in the world. It played a pivotal role in the industrial history of Wales, producing vast quantities of slate for roofing and other purposes. The quarry's complex system of over 30 galleries, or terraces, carved into the mountainside, is a testament to the immense labor and engineering involved. Remnants of this industrial past, including old machinery and structures, are still visible throughout the site, offering a tangible connection to its heritage. Instagram+1

The Welsh National Slate Museum, located at the base of the quarry, provides a deeper dive into this history. It showcases the tools, techniques, and daily lives of the quarrymen. Exploring the museum before or after visiting the quarry can significantly enhance your understanding and appreciation of the site's significance. The museum also helps contextualize the vastness and complexity of the quarrying operations. Reddit

The quarry's dramatic landscape has also attracted filmmakers. Notably, scenes for the 2010 film 'Clash of the Titans' were filmed here, with crews even drying out a quarry pond for specific shots, highlighting the unique and cinematic quality of the location. Instagram
