"Crystal Palace Subway, an absolutely beautiful discovery!
In September 2025, Robert and I decided to go for a little adventure and visit this site, which is only open a few times a month. We pre-booked the tickets online and I fully recommend this. There was no queue on arrival.
The place is absolutely majestic, full of history, and the volunteers are so kind, very involved, and very helpful. We asked a lot of questions, and they answered every single one with heart and excitement. We couldn’t recommend visiting this place highly enough.
A big thank you also to the lottery funding that partly supported the renovation of this beautiful site. It is so exciting to discover that this exists. It was only because our son, Kiro, came across the opening online that we were able to book a ticket.
It turned out to be a lovely way of celebrating our anniversary, and we really enjoyed talking to all the volunteers, particularly the one about the miniature project.
It’s such a shame that the rest of this railway has been destroyed and built over, so only a small part is now visible. But when you are there, you can truly imagine what a grand entrance it must have been to the Crystal Palace Exhibition.
A truly memorable experience! The kind of thing you usually only study in books or learn at school. To see it personally was so exciting."

The Grand Vision: Charles Barry Jr. and the Crystal Palace Subway
The original Crystal Palace, a marvel of engineering and design, was built for the Great Exhibition of 1851 and later relocated to Sydenham Hill. While the palace itself was tragically destroyed by fire in 1936, the subway endured, a silent witness to its former glory. The Grade II* listing signifies its national importance and the need for its preservation.
Recent restoration efforts, partly funded by Historic England and the National Lottery, have breathed new life into this historic structure. These projects have focused on essential repairs, including a new roof and structural improvements, ensuring that the subway can continue to be appreciated by future generations. The transformation has also paved the way for the subway to become a unique new venue, hosting events and art markets, further cementing its place in the community.

Their ongoing efforts ensure that the Crystal Palace Subway remains a vibrant and accessible piece of London's rich history.
