It's praised as a perfect destination for nature lovers and walkers seeking peace and traditional English countryside charm. Some find public transport limited, making a car highly recommended for full exploration.

"We enjoyed a glorious walk through Ashmore Forest on a very hot, sunny day in June. The ancient deciduous woodland is beautiful, shady and cool and the walks are mostly on good paths and tracks with only a few easy climbs.

The wood is awash with wildflowers and we saw so many beetles, bees, dragonflies and butterflies that we lost count of the different species. We also saw a pair of buzzards and some roe deer."

Rich B

"To the south, Cranborne Chase with its smooth rounded downs, steeply cut combes and dry valleys shows a typical chalk landscape. To the north, the topography of the Wiltshire Downs is more varied and broken, with shapely knolls and whaleback ridges. Both areas are fringed on the west by an impressive scarp, cresting above the adjoining clay vales."
