"Beautiful & Historical College
This is one of my favorite colleges in Cambridge. It is grand and beautiful. Dating back since 1352 it is really old and has been at the center of Cambridge education since a really long time.
It has a fantastic lawn and an amazing Britishness to it that I personally really like.
Well worth your time to visit, even if not as famous as some of the other colleges I still think this is a unique and precious building.
Highly recommended!"

"Finally came back to Cambridge after finishing my study and leaving the place 8 years ago. Had a great time visiting Corpus Christi. Porter was super nice and gave us a detailed map of where we could go. Thank you for making my visit as an alumnus enjoyable. (Not all college porters are this nice. There are some awful ones at other colleges!!)"

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

A Glimpse into History: The Founding of Corpus Christi

Corpus Christi College holds the distinction of being one of Cambridge University's oldest colleges, founded in 1352 by the townspeople of Cambridge. This unique origin story, driven by the local community rather than a royal or ecclesiastical figure, sets it apart. The college was established to promote education and provide a place for clergy to pray for the souls of the founders. Its enduring presence for over six centuries is a testament to its significance in the academic landscape. Instagram

The college's architecture reflects its long history, with the Old Court showcasing some of the oldest surviving buildings in Cambridge, dating back to the 1350s. This provides a tangible connection to the past for visitors. Later additions, like the New Court established in 1827, demonstrate the college's evolution over time. The Chapel, also from 1827, features striking stained glass windows that were salvaged from a German abbey during the Napoleonic Wars, adding another layer to its rich narrative. Reddit

Beyond its physical structures, Corpus Christi has nurtured notable alumni, including the renowned playwright Christopher Marlowe and the contemporary novelist Helen Oyeyemi. This blend of ancient foundations and continued academic excellence makes it a compelling place to explore. Instagram

The Marvel of the Corpus Chronophage Clock

A modern marvel within this historic setting is the Corpus Chronophage Clock, a truly unique timepiece unveiled in 2008 by the esteemed physicist Professor Stephen Hawking. Located on the exterior wall of the college's Master's Lodge, this clock is not just for telling time; it's a work of art and a philosophical statement. The name 'Chronophage' literally means 'time eater,' and the clock's design visually represents this concept. Instagram

The clock features a large, golden grasshopper escapement that moves erratically, symbolizing the unpredictable nature of time. A chain with a 'time-eating' monster at the end slowly descends, and when it reaches the bottom, it appears to devour the seconds. This mesmerizing and slightly unsettling display serves as a constant reminder of time's passage and its elusive quality. It's a popular spot for visitors, offering a fascinating contrast to the college's ancient architecture. Instagram

Many visitors find the Chronophage Clock to be a highlight of their visit, appreciating its ingenuity and the thought-provoking message it conveys. It’s a testament to how innovation and tradition can coexist, making Corpus Christi College a place of both historical depth and contemporary interest. TikTok

The Serene Charm of the Parker Library

The Parker Library is arguably the crown jewel of Corpus Christi College, housing one of the most significant collections of medieval manuscripts in the world. Its origins trace back to Matthew Parker, Archbishop of Canterbury and a former Master of Corpus Christi, who bequeathed his extensive personal library to the college in 1575. This collection includes over 600 manuscripts, many of which are priceless historical documents. Instagram

Among its treasures are the Gospels of St. Augustine, a manuscript dating back to the 6th century, and numerous Anglo-Saxon texts that provide invaluable insights into early English history and language. The library itself is a beautiful space, designed to preserve these fragile artifacts. While general public access to the library's interior is typically restricted to protect the manuscripts, its existence and the knowledge it holds are central to the college's academic prestige. Instagram

Even if you can't enter the library itself, knowing about its contents adds a profound layer to your visit. It underscores Corpus Christi's role as a custodian of history and a center for scholarly pursuit, making it a truly special place within the University of Cambridge. Reddit
