"Id hoped that it would be more impressive but im not sure the picture i saw was the same as this with it boarded up and looking drab.. I cant believe im saying this but I was glad I walked up the stairs/ path just to the left back up to clifton as the top was more impressive... in fact I didn't even bother taking pics of bottom (where the position was on map) because it was sooo disappointing"

"Curious piece of history that's worth a quick look if you're in Clifton.
The funicular railway opened in 1893, completely enclosed within the rock wall of the gorge. It ran for 40 years before operations ceased.
The site was occupied by the BBC's backup broadcasting base in the mid 20th century, but has been empty since 1960. Work is underway to reopen the site to tourists, so one day it may be an attraction once more."

The Engineering Marvel of Clifton Rocks Railway

Clifton Rocks Railway is a fascinating piece of Victorian engineering, a funicular railway that was ingeniously built entirely within the rock wall of the Avon Gorge. Opened in 1893, it served as a vital link between the residential areas above and the riverside below for 40 years. The design was a marvel, utilizing counterbalanced carriages to ascend and descend the steep incline, all hidden from view. This unique construction method meant that visitors experienced a journey through the very heart of the gorge. Reddit

The railway's operational life ceased in 1934, but its story didn't end there. In the mid-20th century, the tunnels and chambers were repurposed by the BBC as a backup broadcasting base, adding another layer to its intriguing history. This dual purpose highlights the adaptability and strategic importance of the site. Reddit

Today, while the railway is not fully operational for public rides, restoration efforts are underway to bring this historical gem back to life. Visitors can still appreciate the ambition of its original design and the potential for its future as a tourist attraction. Reddit
